As you correctly predicted this has become an issue and doctor prescribed omeprazole by phone and signed me off for 3 months. Work were delighted. Fortunately I’ve been there more than 2 years so they can’t sack me easily
Hell, you've been through the mill fella!

You need time to heal. Hopefully they now have the balance of your meds right and, with the time off, you'll have the opportunity relax and recuperate.

Best wishes for a full recovery.

On top of the world
After what I thought was a full recovery, and finishing my course of colchicine a few weeks ago, I’ve now experienced another flare up. :( it’s such a scary problem because it presents essentially as a heart attack when it gets bad, so it’s very hard to know what to do
That sounds awful, jc. Hopefully, you can get some meds sorted and start to feel better soon. All the best.

I haven't posted on here yet but it sounds like you're experiencing recurrent pericarditis which as I'm sure you're aware is very rare. Unfortunately it's a condition that isn't very well known and as such treatment methods also aren't necessarily the best!

I had a few bouts of pericarditis and also suffered a pericardial effusion which resulted in a hospital stay of a week. I was referred to the royal free hospital under the care of Professor Helen Lachmann who specialises in the field.

Feel free to DM me.

Admitted to the acute cardiac care unit at RSCH. Got my brother bringing me a care bag later. They’re saying it’s a cardiac effusion, and they are concerned about “tamponade”, which isn’t as delicious as it sounds, and I’ll be in for at least a day or two, as surgery is one possible outcome if the consultant thinks it needs intervention.

But when I Google tamponade it says it’s a life-threatening condition.

“Made a note in my diary on the way here. Simply says, 'bugger'.”

Sounds like infective pericarditis to me.
The tamponade isn't symptomatic at the moment by the sound of it so it is manageable.
Sticking you on colchicine doesn't sound like a curative intervention to me.
If the sample the pericardial fluid they will look for an infective agent and hopefully can then treat it with appropriate antibiotics if it is bacterial.
Best wishes!

Home now and feel the same. They said it’s there but not worth the risk of treatment. No idea what that means.

Feeling better. If I disappear one day you know why.

I'm so sorry that you've had to go through that. After everything, the uncertainty is the last thing you need.

But are they telling you there is not much to worry about? If you have no idea what they mean, ask them.
Otherwise, you may be consigning yourself to a lifetime of unnecessary worry.

Coping with pain is easier if you know what the cause is.

Best of luck.

I'm very surprised that you've been allowed home with a pericardial effusion.

In my case I'd had pericarditis a few times but when I had an effusion it felt totally different. I'd been in A and E and had pericarditis confirmed but was discharged and told to come back to clinic the following day, later that evening I couldn't move anywhere without it feeling like my heart was going to jump out of my chest. I got taken to A and E and was admitted onto the cardiology ward where I stayed for a week! A truly awful experience in the height of COVID where I was in a shared ward and 3 of the guys on the ward passed away.

What medication do they have you on? And have you been referred to Rheumatology? A longer but lower course of Colchicine done the trick for me.

But from seeing a specialist their advice was at the first sign of a flare up I was to take a high dose of anti inflammatorys for a few days

She didn’t give a shit. They basically gave me another 6 weeks of colchicine, it wasn’t something they’d want to risk surgery with a drain, told me to come to A&E if it worsened.
