This is what i have done today, I went to the bike hub just off Lewes Rd, Got an old hard tail trek for £110, I'll use locks but tbh it looks like it's worth nothing so won't get stolen for resale, They sell abandoned bikes etc, these have a sort of service and a quick check over before being sold with any damaged or faulty parts replaced or fixed.
Back in the mid 1980s I was without a bike. My mate sold me his grannies bike for about £2.50 or something like that. It was a proper sit up and beg bike with the metal rods for the front brake.

I rode it along the Old Shoreham Road and left it parked round the back of the Hove Tavern. I had no lock, but didn't think anyone would pinch it. They didn't.

It poured down all game and rained all the way home as well.

Had the bike for some months after that, used to go shopping with it - and no-one ever pinched it!

Bit like this sort of thing

That's what you need - you'll be fine.

As per @ nickbrighton earlier post,
I had a second bike stolen whilst attending a game, The first one was a little over 2 years ago ( Liverpool match) and from the railings by the bus stop in front of Falmer station, we parked there due to police cars always being parked at the entrance to the bus stops during games and assumed it was quite safe. The second time this past Saturday was from the bike racks at Sussex uni sports centre, we were advised this was safer after the first theft.
On both occasions multiple locks were in use with mine and Nicks bikes parked next to each other with locks and cables going through each wheel and connecting to the frames at various points, On Saturday i had an expensive (Oxford brand) D lock, 1&1/2" cable, 2 1/2" combination cable locks and a 1/4" cable attached to both bikes but these were nothing for whatever the thief used, probably a small handheld angle grinder.
Yes i was insured and will get back some of the cost of the bike, last time i got a pay-out of £325 on a 8 year old £1200 Trek bike, so nowhere near enough to actually replace like for like.
The problem with parking your bike within the ground is then getting in and out safely, Unless you want to arrive very early or leave late your effectively fighting for space to move with thousands of pedestrians, the bike racks at the top car park would mean going through the university or using the shared cycle pedestrian path along side the eastbound carriageway, In my opinion the club although wanting to promote sustainable travel have done nothing (other than provide racks) to encourage cyclist, There should be a cycle lane up from the bridge car park, the path is wide enough! there should be CCTV with clear signage stating the area is covered and monitored. I do not want to risk myself or the countless zombies who walk around with no idea of what's going on around them as they are glued to their phone or just don't have the spatial awareness of their surroundings.
# Update#
So last Friday afternoon I was called by the bike shop where I purchased said bike, I had notified them of the theft in case the thief tried to buy a new charging unit, He informed me the police had been in contact and thought they had my bike. Fast forward to this morning and i get a call from the police confirming they have recovered my bike along with multiple other bikes, Sadly only 3 bikes ( mine and 2 others) had been reported stolen and had information so the police could trace the owner. I had not removed the sticker from the shop showing where the bike was bought from and there was also the bike serial number on the frame. Please consider getting something on your bike on the slim off chance it gets recovered by the police.
Also a little unknow fact, E-Bikes and Scooters can not be held in the usual lost property, or storage areas due to the batteries and as such have to be stored in car compounds, so although it was good news regarding the recovery of my bike I then had the privilege of handing over a statutory (recovery) fee and storage fees totalling £244.
That said this is a positive outcome and i am grateful to the Police and the bike shop ( G Whizz ) in helping reunite me with my bike.

They're usually parked by people going to the chemists there. Don't think I've cycled through there without someone double parked there.
I often cycle down there in the evening around 7 and last time I counted 6 cars parked in the cycle lane. I think it's also the takeaways down there. I'm going to complain to the Council if I can find out how.

But this may not solve the scenario of they’re there just for minutes at Westons or grabbing a takeaway.

A sh*tty looking bike can still be well-kept mechanically. Many commuters purposely 'distress' their bikes to combat theft.

There's something strange about that logic. I can't have nice things that I have earned because somebody else will want them enough to nick them.

Thank you. I sent an email to highwaysenforcement at the Council as it's a recurring problem.
On the subject of unattractive bikes to nick, I use my battered 1998 Rockhopper around town. I've started getting it serviced at Cycle Wand near the Level and it runs like a dream.

If it runs "like a dream" wouldn't it be "nick-worthy?"
