Out of interest, has any journo asked Welby whether he is aware of any similar cases? Same question the Archbishop of York. What else have they been hiding away?
I think that is an excellent point. How many more cases are going to come out where a senior churchman knew of wrongdoing and knew it was hushed up? They only ever apologise and say they made an 'error of judgement' when they've been found out*. Let's lance the boil now and get it all out in the open.

* Not that senior C of E figures are unique in that respect of course.

EDIT: Obviously they won't say anything. They'll cite ongoing investigations, unfair to name names, nothing proven, hearsay, and, er, GDPR.

I think he might well be a some sort of a sociopath, what a vile man, the cheek that he thinks HE can forgive when HE is not the victim! He doesn’t get to forgive that’s up to the victims! Can you imagine the anger of the families and the victims .
Agree with your sentiments about him but to be fair, he did say his forgiveness is irrelevant because he wasn't a victim. If he was asked a question as to whether he forgives Smyth or not surely his answer is what you would expect.

I heard that on the radio today.

OK, what's good for Welby is good for me. Ahem:

Well, my forgiveness is irrelevant because none of my kids were victim, but I forgive Ian Brady and Myra Hindley.
You can shake my hand, and share my love, later.

I get his Christian ‘forgiveness’.

But he fails and repeatedly fails to read the room, to put the victims front and foremost. Smyth was a disgusting monster who destroyed innocent lives forever, partly under Welby’s watch for his mate.

Welby could put 100% of his remaining life’s efforts into changing the CoE for the better on child safety, in championing the victims, rooting out the abusers.

Agree with you but to be honest, I wouldn't expect anyone who is a so called man of god to say anything other than that they forgive. I'm not religious as I think it's all a load of crap and wouldn't forgive anyone like Smyth. What I don't understand about Welby is why he turned a blind eye to this and who knows how many other cases and then he whinges about not being able to change the church re safeguarding etc! He was the effing head of the church so who else was going to change it? He needs to name names of those that stood in his way (if they actually did which could be open for debate) and names of any other perpetrators that the church deemed fit to cover up.

A lot of the senior people were friends. No doubt Smyth looked him in the eye and said in the name of our savior I haven’t touched these children. Not good enough of course, his word was irrelevant.
