I'm not quite sure of your point here and whether your agreeing with me or not. Liverpool getting eliminated from a KO competion that they were amongst the favourites for on penalties sort of proves my point. Also, their FA Cup win 3 years ago was on penalties as was their CL win 20 years ago.

We've had way more than 5 shoot outs. I can remember 6 off the top of my end (including last night) since we got to the Premier League alone. And there were some memorable ones before that as well - Swindon in the play offs, Man City etc.
My point was simply that missing two penalties yesterday was not indicative of some sort of underlying malaise, a failure of preparation, etc.

Like Liverpool recently, one of the two teams in the shootout is guaranteed to lose.
The patterns people imagine they see are just chance.

Sort of disagree with you on this.

Most sport is muscle memory and repetitive action, the more you practice etc….

The only thing you can’t replicate is the pressure.

Wasn’t it Gary Player who said “the more I practice the luckier I get”?

I am not making myself clear.
Yes, practice penalties.
Practice often.
But you may still fail to score.
If this were not the case then the match could simply be handed to whichever club is currently higher up the league table.

I also think data Can be used on opponents penalty takers, so at least the keeper would have an idea which way the kick will go

I agree and have no issue with our penalty record. Even losing to Man U was after 6 successful pens. My post before was calling out Swansman's anal(ysis) that England have obsessed too much about pens and that they should concentrate more on winning in 120 mins. My assertion is backed-up by stats provided by @Joey Jo Jo Jr. Shabadoo showing that not concentrating on pens could reduce your chance of winning a major tournament by 50%!

Some patterns are by chance. I don't think that Germany's incredible record is though. You can imagine that the German attention to detail means that every tournament squad will practice high-pressure scenarios to the nth degree. You can probably give credit to Southgate's management for England's improved record as well.

dont matter
Shilton and Seaman were useless at saving penalties for England , one of the reasons that England lost so many penalty shootouts
True this, got some funny looks for shouting at the TV “Get Beasant on for the pens Robson” v West Germany at Italia 90

Agree. We can try to do better.

It’s a shame that Steele is not available, I think Bart needs some competition and has not covered himself in glory recently. All keepers need some competition imo

I am not anti Bart btw, just think he would benefit from being pushed

Rushworth is - and before you ask, Steele had never played in the PL before RDZ chucked him in, so Rushworth's just as qualified as he was..

You think the sharp end of the season is the time to throw a PL rookie into the mix by choice? I don’t agree

The fact that it’s at Palace when we have lost two on the bounce makes it even less sensible….imo

Neither the OP or me were suggesting throwing Rushworth in against Palace; that would be pushing it - just that Verbruggen could do with a bit of competition, which he could. Rushworth's just as capable for that as Steele was - and I wouldn't mind seeing him get a game or two towards the end of the season; Leicester maybe.

That was my first thought. My second thought was the Allison and Ederson aren’t on there. My third thought was that the list is a heap of shit :lolol:
My guess is that because of their age they aren’t considered as being worth as much. But they aren’t that old for goalkeepers.

That’s literally what De Zerbi did.

I don’t however think it’d be the right thing to do in this case. Bart had a poor game on Weds, but our low goals conceded in the 8 previous games are indication enough that it was a one off.

Today would be the perfect day for Bart to be MOTM
