Bart’s not a scapegoat but let’s not pretend he’s good at saving penalties. I often wonder if it’s just one of those innate skills with keepers, because it never really matches up to actual goalkeeping ability.

As it stands, Bart is probably one of the worst in the world at elite level football in regards to penalties.

The issue for me is that I've lost count of the teams that we've played where their keeper is their MOTM, like today.

How many times has Bart done the same?

He will be disappointed with the last two penalties. What I can never understand with keepers that bounce. If they are in the air when the ball is kicked they have no spring to dive. Bart bounces!

Their keeper wasn’t MOTM. We had two shots on target.
Yes in fact he looked their weakest link in the first half

I wouldn't blame him but he should have probably saved one of the last two pens.

And not every one should go in. If it is a bad penalty, the keeper should save it.
Agree, it is simply pointless committing yourself one way or another, on every penalty. Their goalie stood up and followed the ball waiting for a poor one, he got two that were close enough for him to save.

Shilton and Seaman were useless at saving penalties for England , one of the reasons that England lost so many penalty shootouts

If Steele had been on the bench I wonder if Hurzeler would had had the nerve to sub him on for the pens ?. He is good at saving them !

Would t say he’s good but he’s streets ahead of Bart. Starting to think Bart is even worse than Sanchez at them but then remember that’s actually impossible.

The belief that losing penalty shootouts is a bigger problem than not winning the games in 120 minutes, one of the reasons England doesn't win anything.

If people throughout the 90s had asked "why are we not winning games?" instead of "why does this individual not save or score a penalty?" would have beneficial.

But why look at the whole thing when you can always find a scapegoat?

In a sport where the win condition is to score goals, our 16 outfield players yesterday scored a total of 0 goals over 120 minutes. The reaction? "The goalie should be saving penalties!"

I'm far from a big Verbruggen fan but its just silly.

He wouldn't have had the option, would he?

Because of the way the game played out, and the injuries to Georginio and Webster, he had no subs left.

Dunk for Webster was our 5th sub. I think you get an extra sub when game goes to ET.
We'd used the three sub slots, hadn't we, which is why we had to have Webster limping his way through the closing minutes as we couldn't make the sub until extra-time, which we did.

Whilst I agree, in part, and I'm absolutely not looking to scapegoat Verbruggen who I think is a fine keeper who has the potential to become one of the best in the world, being able to get through penalty shootouts is an essential part of cup competitions.

Nottingham Forest have now got through three in a row, and are looking forward to a Wembley semi as a result.
