The Belgian play-off system is designed for drama.

USG’s 7 point lead is now burned off on the first day of the play-offs.

What metric puts Anderlecht ahead in this table? It's surely incorrect as, apart from USG having a better GD, they also would still have an effective half point lead as Anderlecht's total carried through was rounded up from 31.5 to 32.

Both tables are incorrect in the above post. The regular season table is sorted on goal difference as the tie break, but Cercle Brugge made the playoffs at the expense of Gent on games won which is the first tie break after points.

As you say USG are still top of the play off table as Anderlecht had their points rounded up so would always be behind USG in the event of a tie on points.

Still think that finishing 7 points clear after playing everybody twice should give club the title and entry to CL.
Dont think same system would go down well here
You are correct it wouldn’t go down well here. But it’s been in place over in Belgium since around the 09-10 season.

It was voted in as the theory behind it was more games between the top clubs would make teams better and in turn transfer into Belgian clubs doing better in Europe. Since the implementation of the play offs Belgium have gone from 14th to 8th on the co-efficient so it’s been a success in that respect.

At least they give some advantage to sides at top but why not go all the way and let clubs keep all points gained

I guess it keeps the end of season interesting for a load of clubs and is good for both attendances and TV viewing figures. I have to say I quite like the format and wouldn't argue against it in the PL. This season should be fun with Liverpool, Arse and City all close, but it's not uncommon that the PL title race turns into a procession from mid April.

It's certainly much fairer than the play-off system we currently have to decide the 3rd promotion spot, where a team can finish the regular league season 15 points clear of the team that knocks them out in a 2-leg tie 6 days later!

What an idiot Burgess is to get that red. What is he trying to achieve, other than play into the Genk player's aim to waste time

Incidentally - the Genk no.9 involved in the 'take it to the corner' charade at the end of the game, is none other than former Albion fringe player, Andi Zeqiri.

The English Championship/L1/L2 play offs system could be adapted to give a lot more weight in finishing in the top, middle or bottom play off spots than present system.

You could do it by keeping same number of games. 4 play off games, 1 final game.

In say championship.

3rd place goes straight to Wembley final.

6th plays 5th over 2 legs with 5th having second leg home advantage.

The winner plays 4th over 2 legs with 4th having second leg advantage.

Winner plays 3rd at Wembley.

6th 5th have 4 games and 2 ties to get to Wembley final, 4th has 2 games and 1 tie to final, 3rd straight to final.

Still gives 6,5,4 a chance but league position would matter a lot more.
