We would have got a sell-on from Coventry to Lisbon.. not now obviously

Nothing's simple in football anymore.

I understand when a club develops a young player, the developing club is entitled to a percentage of future transfers.

I wasn't sure whether this applied to Viktor, but some people seem sure that it does.

I think we would still be owed a very small percentage as a 'development fee', but could be wrong.
I haven't got the time to try and find it, but I think it's been said before, and very possibly by PBOBE, that sell-on clauses do roll on to subsequent sales if the middle club has a sell-on clause when they sold on.

So, if Coventry currently have a sell-on clause on Gyokeres, we'll be due our %age of that too.

I stand corrected!

This is incorrect.

We get 10% of the profit of whatever the overall fee is that Coventry receive. That is ongoing.

So (according to Transfermarkt's prices), we sold Viktor for €1m to Coventry, who sold him to Sporting for €20m which we received €1.9m of. Coventry have a 15% sell on fee, we would receive 10% of whatever profit they made. So if he sold for €100m to Chelsea. Coventry would receive €12m, and we would receive €1.2m of that money. This would mean overall, though Coventry only paid €1m the first time round, we'd actually receive €4.1m in total.

We stop receiving money the second that Coventry do. This is aside to any development fee which is comparatively minimal.

It might not amount to much though.

I have no idea of the figures involved, but say...

Sporting make a £50m profit on him.
Coventry have a 20% sell-on clause, so receive £10m.
If we also had a 20% sell-on clause when we sold him to Coventry, we'd only be due £2m.

The Portugal league is on par with the Dutch league. Looks to slow for the PL from when I saw him for Coventry.
Agreed and we bought the Eredivisie best player, who also scored a load, and he wasnt up to the level of a bottom 10 PL club.

But there are terrific signings which have been made from both leagues. And also from leagues of a lower standard than those.

To me the conclusion to draw is that progress of a young player is not always linear and it needs to right environment.

We can also add that this seems to be especially true of strikers. Very few excel as teens. Even many of the world greats were nowhere until well into their 20s. You need the physicality and you need to learn the trade of scoring goals.

Some should remember this lesson when judging our own young strikers.

If a young player of ours scores a few goals like Ferguson he’s immediately being sold on here for £100m 🤣

Exactly this. We can't win 'em all. There are a lot of factors that go into the development of a player and it is far from certain that young Viktor would have thrived at the Albion as much as he seems to be doing now.

Good luck to the lad. Shame he couldn't be doing that, here.

Or if he has a few quiet games he's pilloried.

If supporters of one club should know that young players will be inconsistent and have times when they are less effective it should be us, given the number of youngsters we've bought through in the last few years.

In any case. All the best to Viktor. I like seeing ex Brighton players do well for themselves
