I think it is football related....he's not very good.
I think Gilmour travelled a very rocky road with him and is more than back, he is our best central midfielder now having left training in tears etc.

Fab reporting that the loan deal to Stuttgart will include a purchase option at c €9-10m.

Let's have clarity on his future then we can all plan for what we need. I really don't see the advantage of a loan with a possible option to buy. Let's just sell and if needed take the money in instalments

We could actually afford to give him away, if he wants to go. No loss on a free transfer. This would be better than a loan. It seems clear there's no reason to stay.
My thought is we took a punt on him as 1) backup/understudy for Gross and 2) cover for Moder's potential non-recovery.

Why would you give away an asset for free when someone may reimburse you for it? Loan has wages paid or largely contributed to and you retain your asset.

Well. This isn't a new situation.
We didn't pay anything for him, but he'll be on a few quid.
What we want to avoid is a situation where we're endlessly loaning him out but subsidising his wages. The sooner we can get shot, the more chance we can find him a permanent home. If we do this in 2 years, there's no chance of any resale value for the buying club at all

Absolutely and in this case, there's every chance a successful loan will boost the asset's value. It's a no brainer. Even if we could sell him now, there's no real logic to selling him when clubs are not spending money and his value is at a low point. Far more likely to get a better price in the summer.
It's a real shame though, I was really hopeful it would work out as I rated him having watched him in the Bundesliga and thought this fresh start would be great for him but his drop off in performance towards the end of his time at Dortmund seems to have carried on here. It is another example of why I say you shouldn't get any more excited about a signing from the Bundesliga than a signing from Eredivisie though and why Undav's form there doesn't mean we were wrong to loan him out.

He has obvious ability and quality. It's just hard to show it in this league if you're losing the physical battle. Put him in midfield with Bissouma or Caideco, I reckon he'd look a player. With Gilmour, not so much.
Wages could be a stumbling block for holding out for a transfer fee.
If he won't take a cut and none of the clubs that could afford to pay him what we do (or more) want him, we'll be stuck with a non-playing 'asset' that costs us £Xm per year in wages.
A free transfer would make the wages more affordable for a buying club - much like what seems to be our policy for the likes of Welbeck, Milner, Lallana.

I just think it lets us plan as well.
If the situation is, maybe, he'll be here next season, maybe not, it makes it harder to budget for new players.
A clean break is better when it's a senior player who will never play for us again.
If we've not paid a fee, to me it seems churlish to hold out for one, when we know the buying club is unlikely to be able to match his fee plus pay the wages we pay
