Does anyone on here take it?

I suffer from really bad periods of insomnia. I can lay in bed for hours with the most ridiculous stuff going around my head. If I have a few days in a row with poor sleep I then find it very difficult to function properly ... to think and make decisions on simple stuff. I also have an issue some nights when I have to get up to the loo almost every hour - probably due to the old prostate putting pressure on my urethra.

I've tried CBD oil before to try and help with relaxing and improving my sleep - without success. After a really bad period of little sleep last week I decided to explore CBD oil again. I ended up buying this - CBD Oil - although I got a discount and 'ONLY' paid £60.

The reading I did suggested a recommended safe daily dose of 70mg. I placed my order and then literally a couple of hours later saw this story on BBC saying the FSA were now recommending a safe daily dose of only 10mg!!

Cannabidiol safe daily dose limit cut by food regulator

My CBD arrived a few days ago and I decided to go with the 'old rules' for now to see if it helps at all. Last night I didn't get up to the loo until gone 6am - which is a very rare event!!! Sleep hasn't been too bad over last few days either - although it does tend to go in waves anyway.

So ... does anyone on here use it? What sort of dose and how long for? Is it helping?

Sympathise with your plight.

Sounds like a fairly high dose but not an expert and used minimally to a degree of success. There are different types of CBD including those with v small amounts of THC. There will be forums (e.g reddit) where people share their experiences. Perhaps experiment with different doses but cant comment on whats safe.

Other than the standard advice of dark room, not too much caffeine, good bedroom temp, no screens before bed, the following might be useful to you

Deep breathing. Keeping your mouth closed, inhale quietly through your nose while counting to 4. Hold your breath for a count of 7. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 8. Repeat this cycle around 6 times before returning to normal breathing.

Dont lie in bed for hours. If not asleep for 20/30 mins, get up walk about/stretch, read a book for a brief period.

Walk 40 min + a day

Talk through the thoughts running through your head that you mentioned with someone you trust.

Longer term - meditation to help manage those thoughts.

Accept you might not sleep sometimes and thats ok. A process of letting go may allow many more sleep improved nights.

Hope some of that helps!

Thanks … very useful. I’m out on my daily walk as I type. Usually do well over 10,000 steps most days. Bedroom ‘hygiene’ is all good. The CBD oil I ordered this time is full spectrum so has a tiny (legal) amount of THC.

Will have a look at the breathing exercises 👍

No way!?

You mean Matt and Merse didn't invent it, in a home made lab, in Rickie Lambert's garage?

I feel cheated.
Thanks for taking the piss on a thread I started hoping to get some decent advice and input on a serious issue for me. This is why I often think about buggering off from this forum! Thanks for nothing!

Apologies. I was taking the piss out of said idiots - not you. Such responses interspersed with the sensible replies you'll still get, are what NSCs is about.

No harm meant. I hope you get some sound advice that you find helpful.

Hi @heavysoul,

Agreeing with the poster above. No internet screens after say 10pm (I’m bad at that). A movie, delve into a boxset or read until you start dozing.

No daytime cat napping. Recommended 30 mins max if you do.

A brisk walk is fine, don’t do the 10k steps if you don’t enjoy it. Get daylight and experience nature.

Limit your exposure to bad news!

I struggled a bit just the same as you (although not the insomnia you describe). Anxiety was getting a bit out of hand, head spinning with work thoughts when trying to get to sleep, fretting about pointless things, and getting up to go to the loo far too often for my age. I was also an anxious mess for a few days before holidays or weekends away which was a new thing that seemed to have come on in my late 30s early 40s, never troubled me before. Without me having listed off my troubles a colleague mentioned at a work event that he used CBD oil to keep a lid on the inability to sleep due to work stress so I thought I would give it a go.

I've been using it for about 18 months, I have zero idea how many mg I take unfortunately, I have two drops in the morning when I get up and two in the evening and have found it really helps. Whether its the placebo effect or not I don't much care, but I just find it rounds the edges off my stresses, helps me sleep, stops me getting up quite so much for a pee (which was definitely stress related) and trips away aren't anywhere near the same stressful experience they used to be. I'm a convert and will carry on with it. If it works, and it does for me, I don't much question how or why, I'm just happy to have found something that has straightened my life out for a bit.

I say give it a go for a couple of months and see what happens. Although insomnia is more serious than anything I have/had so some of the advice above is going to be useful as well I'm sure.

No worries - breathing exercises are great. Tip - do them in the day sometimes as well and not just when trying to sleep. Lowers stress generally and therefore can aid sleep later on.

I struggled to get on with CBD, but CBN has been incredibly beneficial for aiding my sleep. 20-45 mins before bed and I’m out for an average of 7hrs straight rather than 8hrs of interrupted intermittent sleep.

The Wim Hof breathing exercises are great for this. I use them regularly at bedtime or even in bed.

I should add that I’m unsure of CBN’s legality in the UK. I it’s legal here in Canada. It has been helpful for dealing with anxiety.

Thanks Westy :)

I've had this issue for a number of years - on and off. Tried all sorts ... pretty much everything that is recommended by websites like Sleep Foundation.

I never sleep during the day but do find myself falling asleep in front of the TV anytime from 8pm/9pm in the evening when watching dramas on TV. I often have to catch up the next day and watch the bits I've missed!!

I read when I go to bed and often drop off in the middle of reading - waking as I'm dropping my book. Actually getting to sleep is usually OK. It's the constant waking up in the night - loo visits - and then not being able to get back to sleep which is the problem. And sometimes waking after 4am and just knowing I won't get back to sleep!

I paid for private CBT a few years ago. They start off by trying to reset your sleeping cycle. They do that by telling you not to go to bed until midnight/1am - but getting up usual time of say 7am. And a 'trick' for when the mid is working overtime ... a bit like counting sheep, but focusing on one simple word that doesn't have any connotation ... like 'the'. So you just repeat the the the the the! I paid for 12 months CBT but gave up after 6 months as it wasn't really helping and we just seem to be going over the same old stuff every day.

Oh ... and I absolutely love walking. It's my favourite form of exercise. I have different routes I do and sometimes get a bus or train somewhere random and walk home.

And yes ... I'm avoiding the news in general more and more generally. Another reason that thread zapping tool would be useful for!

On the subject of caffeine, my doctor advised no tea or coffee after 4pm. I do have a hot drink at night but it is usually caffeine free tea.

Caffeine can definitely be a problem. I mostly have caffeine free tea/coffee at home (I'm more of a coffee drinker) ... and even out I never have a full on coffee if it's after 12 noon.

Really appreciate your reply ... I recognise a lot of what you've said about your own situation.

Good to hear the CBD oil is working for you. Depending on the strength of the one you take, I reckon with 4 drops over the course of the day you'd be well within the old FSA safe limit ... but they've reduced it by so much that you might just be over it now. I think the new limit is just being overcautious ... like when they've changed the recommended max number of alcohol units!
