Gah, I was hoping you might be a Red Dwarf fan and this conversation could've gone on for weeks

His latest explanation is that the Big Bang was a process that saw energy transform into matter. Could the universe have been created from a white hole?

Using this we can calculate the age of the current observable universe.

There are a few possible explanations for what was before.

When I said the Universe I meant the beginning of everything.

The big bang? That wasn't the beginning because something created the big bang so there was something already before the big bang.
There was never nothing before the big bang because nothing is something.

How did it all begin? It could never have begun.Even emptiness is something so where did emptiness come from?

I often ponder this question but It does your head in thinking about it doesn't it? When we are dead there is nothing (possibly?) except there is something.

You’re thinking too linear. Our consciousness is wired to the flow of time but the universe isn’t. We know far too little, our physics uses terms like dark energy and dark matter because we cannot explain what most of the universe is made from or the energy within it. Quantum mechanics, Higgs Bosons, glimpses of the stuff we don’t know. The beginning is just a construct of time.
