[Football] De Zerbi showing his crack?

According to Inter Live there is a divergence of philosophy between the club and De Zerbi. Our M.O has been to recruit raw talent, polish it off and sell some of it on. De Zerbi, it is alleged wants to be more ambitious and retain the best players and recruit more experienced and players of greater stature. The report suggests there is a developing 'crack' between the manager and the club. Surely there is a compromise between the two philosophies? I'm also pretty sure Bloom shares his ambition but in a more considered manner with a greater time scale.

I think that Italian press may be pushing the envelope here in terms of ‘rifts’. I expect they want to see Roberto back in Italy.
He knows our stance on recruitment and he was happy for us to let his recruitment guy go.
We’ve given big new contracts out to star players in an attempt to retain them.
Even if it is genuine, we won’t diverge from our stance as it puts us in a great position going forwards to cement ourselves as a mid to upper table Premier League team.

I’m sure he wants the best possible players, and I’m sure Tony does too within our wage structure. End of story. The goal is sustainability and hopefully repaying some of Tony’s enormous loans to the club. I trust the club implicitly.

No such thing as cementing ourselves as a mid-table to upper Premier League team, particularly if we sell our best players.

Lose too many key players, and we could well find ourselves in the relegation mix next season.

I predict that TB will be looking to keep all of our best players here if we can, even if that means increasing our wage budget, as we aim to establish ourselves as European regulars.

What I don't expect to happen is for us to start splashing the cash on big name players. That rarely works out for clubs of our size and stature.

The Athletic, today

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi is gradually getting accustomed to Brighton’s way of doing things.

The Italian had his own man in place as the assistant head of recruitment, Salvatore Monaco, a former central defender with multiple clubs in De Zerbi’s homeland. They worked together at Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine.

Monaco, appointed in October, left after the January transfer window because he was not needed. De Zerbi sanctioned his exit.

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber, responsible for the running of the club on Bloom’s behalf, said: “We’ve got a different process to a lot of clubs, we don’t charge around the world, constantly watching matches looking at players, which is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

“We focus on the areas for improvement, focus on the players that we feel can fill that gap and then send our eyes-on scouts to look specifically at those players.”

January was De Zerbi’s first experience of the way Brighton operate during a transfer window, which is different from the summer window when they prefer to do most of their business.

“I’m getting used to working with algorithms in another way in the transfer market and I’m getting used to appreciating this way,” De Zerbi said.

“I didn’t know it before. I spent a lot of time studying new players on video, but now I understand there is another way to find players.

“At Sassuolo (in Serie A) and Shakhtar, it was totally different. I had one of my team who gave me a player’s name and I studied the players, but without numbers, without data, only on video.”

Bollocks being pushed by Italian press to create a rift. If RDZ wasn’t happy with our way why did he sign off on letting go the recruitment guy that came in with him.

I think there was a point when, like any manager would, RDZ said he would like control on signings. This got twisted by the press as him saying he was unhappy. But as the months have rolled by he’s seen that the way we do things here is pretty productive, so has left his trust with our recruiters.

RDZ was supposedly miffed that he couldn't get his target in the January window.

His mood since - and the recruitment change detailed above - suggests that this blew over.

Won't be easy for him to lose (at least) two key players in the summer, though.

After keeping hold of Caicedo, giving Mac a new contract before the world cup and new contracts for Lallana and Gross it seems he's getting exactly what he wants. We'll see how the summer plays out I suppose.

I have no doubt that it will end in tears as RDZ is ambitious and I am not convinced that the slowly slowly catchy monkey approach will be enough for him. Once he feels we’ve hit his ceiling I think he’ll be off. Hoping for another couple of seasons from him but can see it unravelling very quickly when it does.

Let me be wrong please

He came to us because we
1: Have good players
2: He could work with these players and he felt he could improve them.
3: He liked the way we play from U16s through to the first team.
4: He knew we had a philosophy at the club of bringing players through the ranks.
5: He also must have been impressed with Bloom & Barber in the interview, they will have told him our outlook and where we see ourselves and he took the job knowing this all and obviously felt he could work within any so called constraints the media now say are a moot point between board and manager.
6: In interviews he constantly reminds the interviewer "We are Brighton, we know who we are"
7: It is all Bollox

You are right, unfortunately. I'll be amazed if this relationship ends amicably.

What won't be do is sign a 28 year old for 80 million, that's obvious. But we have proven we will sign the right older players. We've also signed players in their early to mid twenties like Trossard and Pervis (at least) who definitely weren't unpolished kids.
