Gary Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day until an agreement is reached on his social media use - BBC statement.
It follows an impartiality row over comments he made criticising the government's new asylum policy.
In a tweet, the presenter had compared the language used by the government to set out its plan to "that used by Germany in the 30s".

Agree with this, got fed up with 'boys down the pub one upmanship' always banging on about 'their' teams, how many goals they scored or golden boots they won, get rid preeminently.
you know you can watch just the highlights on sky sports app / website from about 6pm right? If you don’t like the punditry then other formats have always been available

Ha! I thought I was quite calm, but waking up at 5am on a saturday morning suggests perhaps I wasn't as calm as I thought. I admit the first word of my post was rude and unnecessary so I apologise for that.

I didn't (nor anybody else as far as I'm aware) say the Tories are Nazis, so telling me they're not isn't necessary. You think Braverman shouldn't be home secretary, Gary's been a tool and that's "the sum of it". I think there's much more to it than that. The government are trying (successfully at the moment, although it will ultimately backfire on them) to control the BBC. You seem to think that's a trivial matter, or perhaps you don't think they are trying to control the BBC. Either way I think you're wrong.
Respect that, the BBC has been used as a political football (no pun intended) by successive governments probably since its creation. Governments are always trying to control it. Linekers mistake as I and others have repeatedly pointed out was to cite the Nazis in all but name. All this nuisance nonsense about the language, and he didn’t expressly use the name Nazis thereafter is I’m afraid not going to wash. As we’ve seen. Gary’s a fool if he thought otherwise. That or he’s too clever for his own good. Either way he’s miscalculated. Twitter isn’t the platform to debate such a complex matter. All he’s done is empower a government further that would like to revoke the licence. There’s a lot more at stake than Gary Linekers ego and bloody football as many call our beloved sport.

There are already many free ways to watch the match highlights without studio punditry prior to MOTD airing each evening.

MOTD’s only real USP is the pundits it chooses to present its flagship show.

I find it strange anyone who dislikes Lineker et al bothers to stay up to watch it.

Are these your own words or something you've once again copy pasted from some column or article without mentioning it?

what are the differences between the nazi party's language and the nasty party's?

Do you often lift opinions verbatim and pass them off as your own?

I’ll stand corrected if you can find where I said I wrote that excerpt myself. But sneering a side, it succinctly expressed by own view perfectly so threw it into the late night NSC and waited to see what people said before inevitably someone ticked me off for plagiarism. Which is by the by really as this is NSC, not Cambridge Exam board. Sorry there’s no prize. Regardless, a leading Guardian journalist expressing having the same thoughts and opinion as mine is nice to read. Means I’m not ‘wrong’ as a few critics on here have said I am.

The BBC is bias, they removed a documentary by national treasure and all round good guy, David Attenborough, because they were worried about Right Wing backlash and had pressure from right wing MPs. Let’s not forget the Tories appoint the head of the BBC who is a former head of communications for the Tory party. It’s completely hypocritical to criticise Lineker alone.
Except the BBC have expressly denied this and put out a statement to this effect. They are also broadcasting it. But the conspiracists are entrenched in their view it’s further evidence of government censorship and there’s no hope of them changing their stance. So 2023…

That is just not how anything works. A journo writing a column agreeing or disagreeing with you doesn't make you right or wrong.

Your problem about Gary Lineker is that he doesn't agree with you and the Tories about immigration. If he had expressed positive opinions about this government decision, you wouldn't have any problems with him expressing opinions in public. Since he's not agreeing with you, you are turning every stone to find arguments why a person living in a supposed democracy is not allowed to express his personal opinions without getting suspended from his job.

He's being doing it too long now anyway IMO.

He's become so dull now there is a chance to freshen things up. Sometimes it's just best to move on and this seems like the perfect opportunity.

New blood needed.

Hugely impressed by Lineker and all those others staking their careers on supporting him.

Every time the boats get mentioned I'm reminded of the St Louis as an example of the lengths societies will go to to justify themselves denying others support without shame, and the human consequences of that. This brief, 11 minute podcast is worth a listen https://thememorypalace.us/stories-about-the-st-louis/

I knew someone would try that one.

He knew exactly what he was doing. He chose his words carefully to encourage debate.
He meant everything he wrote and hasn't apologised or backed down.

Look what's happened - it's gone global.

Back of the net Gary!

It's ripped the net and hit a couple of "i'm not racist but... " people stood behind the goal in the face. Now they're red faced and frothing at the mouth with anger.

I think there's a plenty on NSC would argue that anything in the Guardian is 'wrong' but few would point it out for fear of a torrent of abuse. Anyway, good news is that Alex Scott won't be stepping in to replace Lineker.

I can assure you that Barney Ronay won’t have known your thoughts and opinions when he wrote that. Therefore, you are agreeing with him and not the other way round.

In other words you’ve read it uncritically, copied and pasted it, thought “that’ll do” and gone to bed.

As for the bit about not being Uni, you do realise there are copyright laws in this country? Break them again and you’ll have some time off. I’ve lost count of the times Bozza has asked people not to post images that are copyright protected and to acknowledge source when quoting an article

Sorry I wasn't trying to catch anybody out.
Correct me if I am wrong but if he apologies for his use of language he wins with everyone doesn't he? I wonder why he thought it correct to bring those torrid times into it, it had to be rash thinking on a social media account. Many have done it, I personally hoped he would have apologised for his language, he still could though. Let's hope so.
