I don’t think you guys here in England appreciate how special it is to have a king . Particularly as Charles seems such a nice man who only wants to do good . I’m respectful of him and the position he holds even if he isn’t my King as I’m not English .

I’m surprised there isn’t more patriotism here . With your history there really should be .
He isn't my king and I am English.

This is obviously a joke? Nothing gets up my nose more than spending public money on pomp and bullshit whilst wages decline and the welfare state crumbles into private hands. I just think of Mobutu or Marcos in golden palaces. Our history is one of aristocratic parasites carving up the land and driving us into the cities to choke on factory fumes. Come on you super seagulls.
Wages are not declining because of the Royal Family. The Royal Family brings more wealth to the country that it could ever cost. Mobutu and Marcos are hardly good comparisons. As for land thank goodness Royalty (ie the nation) owns vast amounts of land - can you imagine it falling into the hands of developers? Be careful what you wish for - comrade.

17 million people joined in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations last year. It also boosted expenditure in the high streets of the country.
BRC-Sensormatic IQ data revealed that total UK high street footfall increased by 6.9% over the long weekend, compared with the average for May 2022. Total footfall for the whole week increased by 17.1% as retail hotspots benefited from the school holidays.

Yeah, imagine, God forbid, that we depose the monarch and install a President. What a nightmare. Presidents are not nearly as interesting as royals, and we'd also be committed to another election. President Blair, Johnson, Corbyn anyone?

They don't, although the establishment will tell you otherwise.

Take Thunderbolt's reply for example. She'll have you believe that jubilee was responsible for an up to 17.1% increase. Yet, even if you accept the lower figure increase (6.9%), you are not seeing that in comparison to other long weekends in May. Do you honestly think non-Royal bank holiday weekends don't increase high street spending by a similar figure, if not more?

Or Dench, Attenborough or Fry?

Who says we have to have <insert politician you don't like> as a president? A ceremonial apolitical presidential alternative would be fantastic IMO. But we live in a world where 2 thirds of this country are happy enough with injustice so bad that senior royals get away with suspected noncing, fraud, using the RAF as a personal taxi service and so on - because they're scared of losing an unelected head of state.

I'm bored of the argument. If Andrew's conduct isn't enough to make people see the injustice of lack of accountability, then nothing is.

Presidents live in very large properties, have to have paid security and would cost a fortune without the benefit of an income from the Crown Estates.

Yes, I am a royalist, and dislike the current situation since the late Queen died. I do not like Camilla or what she has done to the family, so that should satisfy those who call me a lickspittle!! :lolol:

I spent two nights in London last June as part of the RBL contingent outside Buck House for the Trooping of the Colour. Not only did we pay for two nights in a hotel, but spent money in restaurants, on the Tube and train, so it all adds to the economy.
Walking through London, there were loads and loads of tourists, taking photos of anything that moved.

It was a four day weekend as opposed to a three day weekend, so that makes a difference. My other post includes the tourists and hospitality sector.

I like those suggestions. Perhaps if we had a President, disqualifying criteria could be that one had ever held any political office?

Yes, that isn't an unreasonable suggestion at all. But it's never discussed as an alternative to the injustice of an unaccountable unelected family at head of state, because we always get the lazy "who wants a President Blair or Cameron" type argument.

Lazy or realistic? Personally I think that's what would happen.

Not if your criteria suggestion was implemented.
Sadly or perhaps fortunately, my views don't carry the weight to have that kind of influence.

You mention quite highbrow choices for president. Imagine though that it were the lowest denominator type candidate. Jordan, Rylon (or whatever he's called) or probably worse entities I am unaware of.
