The police have designated a recent murder as a "hate crime". Why? What exactly does this mean? Aren't all murders "hate crimes"? What's the alternative description? So many of the labels used by the authorities are just stupid. A personal opinion of course.

Another one is "special measures". What exactly are "special measures"? What's "special" about them? Do they achieve anything?

Get with the programme. Everything must be labelled. Everything must be captured. Everything must be measured. But interestingly, nothing ever changes. Except to worsen.

Adds to the aggravating factors at sentencing, also possible premeditation examined during the trial itself.

There’s a big difference between an impromptu murder and going out to hurt/murder someone who’s ‘different’. Which is little comfort to the loved ones of all victims of course.

All will be revealed in the trial.

It’s good to closely document these things too I think. Without the knowledge, society won’t know where exactly prejudice and resulting violence is occurring, what can be done about it.

I know of quite a few murders that have been committed by people known to each other / friendship groups. Some of these have been literally arguments between best friends that have tragically ended in someone losing their life. Theses types of murders are not hate crimes, there is clearly a difference.

An innocent 16 year old boy was stabbed to death the other day. Didn’t even make the news headlines with the BBC, whilst the Brianna Ghey story had three separate articles.

The difference being that Ghey’s case was more newsworthy as she was transgender.

Both are tragedies and deserved equal coverage, which they did not receive.

I think she was killed because she was a young trans girl. She was killed because she was hated for who she was. That’s hate crime.

I’m sure you don’t really need that explaining.

You don’t have enough details on either to make that judgement.

Brianna case seemingly more shocking that the perpetrators were a 15 year old boy and girl.

What's the boy's name?

That is tragic. And it is tragic that we have far too many deaths among young people. Do we know why this young man was killed? It makes it no less tragic, but was he killed because of who he chose to identify as? Was he killed because of ethnicity or gender or ability? That would be good to know before we can comment further on any differences between the tragic case of his murder and hers.

The murder of a child is tragic. It isn’t a sliding scale of tragedy based on what they identify as, in my mind. Hate crimes are tragic. Random attacks are tragic. It’s not a competition to decide which is most newsworthy.

I don’t want news to be editorialised by trusted sources, I just want the facts.

A lot of things happen each day. Of course they have to pick and choose which stories to run.

The courts quite rightly will bring the alleged hate crime element into it, for the reasons I said above.

Also said above, such factors must be established, so that we can move on as a civil society.

Some scummers in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s deliberately targeted gay men in for example St James’s Street late at night, for an activity they called Gay Bashing. If it hadn’t have eventually been taken seriously, examined and recognised, the authorities/society wouldn’t have given it the attention it required. I like to think (could be wrong) that those streets are safer now. Whilst the next gen of scummer have moved onto the next group to physically attack.

Yes, I agree completely. I just personally find the murder of any innocent person abhorrent. A big part of it is knife crime, which is why innocent people can be murdered in an Asda car park by 15 year olds carrying kitchen knives.

As usual, with sensitive subjects like this, people can become somewhat hysterical. JK Rowling, for instance, has been receiving death threats and been accused of “murdering” Brianna Ghey. Streamers playing the latest game, Hogwarts Legacy, have been doxxed and suffered death threats to their families - even their young children.

This is a tragic murder like any other, the hate crime aspect is for the courts to rule over not the media.

Remembering that a 16 year old boy killed in very similar circumstances didn’t even get a mention until the family campaigned for their voice to be heard.

I’m team JK Rowling ….. I have lively debates with my daughter about it :lolol: . JK’s not transphobic. Just a feminist and pro women only spaces.

All murders are disgusting. Knife crime, imho the second time you’re found guilty of carrying a knife, a strong sentence should be given.

But I’m pleased hate crime is a thing the police and legal system do categorise. It doesn’t mean special treatment. But it is an attack on racists, anti semites, homophobes etc. Let’s crush these cowards.
