The media are ignoring this. Only the BBC and Argus seem to have mentioned it. MotD covered this, but we were shoved away at the end of the programme. Nothing in the tabloids or broadsheets. All of their reporting about the Arsenal and Chelsea games are about whether BAR got decisions right. In this case, it seems that PGMOL May have admitted that they got it disastrously wrong. However, this is not completely clear as the BBC's article downs't quote them and nobody else has cared to ask. Where is the reporting?
PGMOL admitted to the mistake directly to the club late last night. Club are now briefing it to media as TalkSport now picked up on it

Yep just been the second sports headline on there after the 9am news and will be repeated with every TS sports news bulletin today I imagine.

Definitely need an end of season PL table produced that is corrected for VAR errors to highlight the farce it is and it should be widely published in the sports media.

That’s my theory.

The VAR ‘techie’ whom drew the line is a ****ing Palace fan. Officials trusted the system and didn’t question where the line was.

The line drawing cheat should be sacked, named and shamed.

Edit: The match should be replayed.
If not a Palace fan it was somebody who did not want Albion winning that game. I don’t think it’s possible to call that line drawing a “mistake”. It was deliberate

They won't get rid of it.

I wonder if some of the issue is actually the decision about when the ball is 'kicked'.

Is it when the passer first touches the ball, as he is hitting it, or the moment before it leaves his foot? And who decides this? It's rarely scrutinised but it could make the difference of perhaps a foot to the receivers position.

Would it make offsides less controversial if the lines were drawn as a gap appears between the boot and ball?

I know this won't get rid of the slide rule, but at least it gives the benefit of the doubt initially to the attacker.
Wouldn’t that give the benefit of the doubt to the defender? The later you leave it, the more likely the attacker is to be in an ‘offside’ position.

I suspect the story missed their deadlines. It wasn’t something reporters at the match would be likely to notice at the time. I’m sure there’ll be more attention paid in the coming days, though nothing like the outrage it would prompt if it happened to Arsenal, Liverpool, City or the like. Which is annoying as the effects on our season could be every bit as important. That said, Bournemouth could have had a penalty last week and who knows what might have happened after that? If we miss out on Europe by 2 points, pinning it on one moment of the season alone wouldn’t really be accurate.

CONFIRMED AS VAR ERROR!!!

Now what? What appeal process? Linesman and ref didn't call it as offside - VAR overruled it. Can it be rescinded?

Do they understand the importance of beating our rivals Palace? How we spend weeks only thinking about this game.

If we miss out on Europe by two points... I'm honestly fuming.

VAR is broken.

VAR always had the potential to be sh*te as it involves too many opportunities for human error. I’d keep it only for factual things that can’t be a matter of opinion, ie did the ball cost the line (although Villa managed to screw even that one up) and scrap it for everything else.

I watched the first half with no commentary. When I saw that it was being referred to VAR I was fairly confident based off of the clips/still they were showing. Then the still with the lines came out and I was surprised by how far Estupinan 'appeared' to be off. Even though it looked like the defensive line was being drawn from Tomkins(?) and not Guehi(?) I assumed that they had a different angle than what was being shown. Never occurred to me that it was genuinely because they measured the line from the wrong defender.

How is that even possible? They have all the time and to get it right and yet they miss the most basic of things- the last defender in the middle of the screen. Not only that it's used to overrule the correct on field decision by the ref and lino. It's astonishing. Whoever made that mistake should not be allowed to ever do VAR again amongst whatever other punishment is appropriate.

Hopefully we can use this to fuel a sense of injustice and us against them mindset that powers us through the rest of the season.

Well Whoopie do

Maybe the club should be demanding some changes not just accepting it.
The fans should always come first and VAR is destroying enjoyment on a match day
Something needs to change and just blithely accepting it isn’t going to change anything at all.
I agree but the FA can fine the club as it does managers, and players if they criticise the referees or officials. I remember Poyet getting fined £15000 ten years ago for his comments, post match, about a ref.

I suspect, behind the scenes, PBOBE is emailing various bods he used to work with and asking questions, but cannot be seen to do it publicly.

Even if that was the case, the VAR official should instantly see the line is drawn to the wrong player.

I cannot believe how ineffective the officials are. Howard Webb was heralded as a champion of VAR, who would sort the problems out. He has made it worse. He said PGMOL will put their hand up when they get things wrong. Their hand isn't going down anytime soon. They are like a serial abuser, apologising after the event and then committing more abuse the next week. They have shown no intention to learn from their mistakes. They need to change their behaviour immediately. Incompetence should be punished.

I don't know what the answer is other than scrapping VAR at the moment. Until we can create reliable AI there will always be human error and I would much rather that error was made on the field than spend 5-10 minutes playing Russian roulette with VAR every time there is a goal or foul.

I'm sure VAR is brought up at every Premier League board meeting. The need to consign it to the bin.

Var has been and will continue to be a disaster for football. Broken and tedious, it’s sucked the very enjoyment from the game. When will the wankers in charge understand we don’t want it? A failed experiment

Unfortunately there's nothing we can do, and VAR is here to stay.

The only positive is that it's another piece of evidence to change how VAR works.

I fully believe they should go full 'clear and obvious', no lines drawn or extended breaks in play. If someone on a monitor can't see something seriously obvious with one or two replays then just play on. Should be no need to stop play; goals should be allowed/disallowed just as quickly as goal line technology.

Okay, it won't be 1000% exact, but we can't eliminate human error anyway as proven yesterday.

Yet another late night announcement by PGMOL about 5 hours after the game had finished (same timings when Ferguson was assaulted by Liverpool).

Get the refs to face the cameras after the game to explain their decisions (Note: the on pitch ref always makes the final decision so could have asked to see the pictures) like managers and players do.

The standard of reffing in this country has gone downhill over the years. Refs and linos ( yes Lino’s not assistant refs) don’t even make decisions at times now as VAR is there as some sort of backup system.

On a separate note, how come we have the best players in the World in this country playing football, but no elite foreign refs.? Jobs for the boys ( and girls)?
