Under achieved at Belgium? Yes, last tournament was dire but he got them to the top of the world rankings and I believe lost only 3 games in his first 58. 46 of those were won.
This.

That Belgian squad is now getting too old and is riven with internal strife. They’ll end up like the Dutch did a while ago. But they were VERY good for most of Martinez’s tenure.

I guess the only 'world ranking' that really matters happens every 4 years. Impressive stats but I bet many of those came in qualifiers against the minnows.

Bizarre comment. Only one team can win the WC every 4 years. Look at the history of Belgium and let us know when they have done better?

It's a bit like saying there's only one good manager in the EPL and that's the one whose team won it.

I don't think he did so bad at Wigan when you consider the resources they have/had and the massive competition from big teams in the Manchester & Liverpool conurbations. Kept them up for 3 years and then they won the FA Cup.

I do think the FIFA world rankings are a bit meaningless, you can sit at the top of them for years and not win anything. Would Argentina lose any sleep over the fact Belgium were ranked higher than them in the years proceeding the 2022 WC? Belgium done better? Didn't they reach the semis in 86?

Belgium did well. Never had the defense to be the top, top candidate to win a big tournament despite their wealth in midfield and attack.
Wigan would probably trade whatever they're doing now for an FA Cup win and a bottom 3 position in the PL.
When the Everton fans moaned him to the sack, he had just taken them to semi-finals in the FA and Cabbage Cups as well as twelfth place in the league. While they did a little bit better in the league (8th place three seasons in a row I think) in the seasons afterwards, 5-11-12 was far from bad.

Seen as a ‘cup’ manager because if the Wigan FA Cup victory and still dining out on that?

His predecessor Wilmotts got to 2 quarter finals in his 3 years, but Belgiums success is down to them producing many top players all at the same time. Stats are meaningless, Fabio Capello is Englands greatest manager if you go on stats alone

definitely under achieved in Qatar. most of Belgium squad seem to dislike him. reminds me of an ambitious middle manager in a sales company who is great at self-presentation.

Can remember the day in 2007 when he brought his Swansea side to face Horsham in the FA Cup, goodness knows what he made of our ramshackle old Queen Street ground.

I didn't meet him, but he was the perfect gentleman so l'm told.
