He’s a decent keeper. But you always feel he has a calamity in him, as was just proved on the biggest stage.

I did enjoy it, then I read your post and quickly didn’t.
Being generous, he was in a difficult position with two Argentines bearing down on him . Should have belted it though.

Very generous.
Twice in the first half I found myself saying ‘FFS Ryan’ as he did risky passes across his goal.

Potter definitely got the keeper decision correct, and Ryan always seemed a little too arrogant for a guy giving three or four inches away to other keepers.

This. Was pretty arrogant from him thinking that he can take on and beat 2 top Argentinian strikers.

Forgetting the error goal I said to my wife before the first goal that if the ball was hit into any of the four corners and with some pace and Ryan was starting from the middle of the goal, he wouldn’t get it. A bigger keeper would have kept that first goal out imo.

90+ mins of commentator Messi wankfest annoyed me btw, especially when Mac Allister’s quick ball (passed to him by Messi in fairness) made the first goal and that didn’t get a mention as they went into raptures about Messi.

It is very easy to criticise Ryan for that goal but he also made some cracking saves as well. Such is the lot of the goalie that it’s only the mistakes and goals that are remembered. He has got a decent career under his belt, played for his boyhood club in Arsenal and earns shedloads of money. Oh and he’s played at the World Cup. No need to feel sorry for him and I don’t. I’d rather remember the good saves he made and the enthusiasm he showed when he played for us.

Yes, said many times didn’t rate him - still don’t.

Quite a few errors, but also some great saves to be fair.

Very reliant on Dunk and Duffy. I don’t wish ill on him, but not a fan of Australia and pleased they lost.

First time I ever saw him was this game. A shot went straight through his hands. It didn't exactly instil confidence.

Did a job and was good for our level at the time. But like other members of that squad, we have moved upwards and onwards in terms of quality and expectation.

Not to mention having played on the same pitch as Messi. I often wonder what happens in the scramble to get Messi’s shirt, or whether there’s an understanding that the opposition aren’t allowed to ask for it.

Funny how easily we all, very much myself included, forget about all the first class saves (Stockdale wouldn't have made) he also made in that game.

Your second point is correct, as someone far smarter than me said, possibly @Pavilionaire, we don't get to Sanchez, Caicedo, Mac Allister, without Ryan, Propper & Groß (being the glorious outlier) and for that they should be praised/acknowledged/ignored.
Not vilified in a 'hahaha I was right he was shite' stylee.

I liked him, he had his weaknesses. Aside of the one error he had a decent game yesterday

Yep. The commentators and pundits were immensely irritating. The clips they used to illustrate their nonsense were embarrassing in that they didn’t show anything of the sort. Messi looked decent. That’s it. All this guff about football fans wanting to see Messi lift the World Cup. That’s not football fans.

Bit like the goalie equivalent of Mike Dean for me. He did a lot of very, very good things and his average was high. But when he got it wrong, boy did he get it wrong. I remember thinking how Grobbelaar like he seemed in that game. Took no pleasure in seeing that last night but like most Albion fans, just gave a knowing nod and thought "He always had that in his locker".
