Surprised no thread on this (I looked and searched and can't see one, apologies if nevertheless there is).

I listened to the whole of Nihal's interview with Gary Neville today on radio 5. What a bloke. Astonishing. Check it out - bound to be on the iPlayer.

I was amused by his stance about being an MP. He said that he wanted the freedom to gob off without having to toe any party line, and wanted to spend lots of time watching football and running his businesses.

Boy can he talk without the need to inhale, though.

I thought Nihal was a bit unreasonable criticizing Neville's stance over engagement. Nihal seemed to be saying that we should ban any nation with a bad human rights record from football (a view with which one may have sympathy) whereas Neville argues that we should take football everywhere and use this as an excuse to berate any medievalists for their human rights violations (more constructive that putting the Saudis, etc., on ignore, shirley?). Neville did not say we should simply pop over to Qatar, drink camel's milk, and keep our gobs shut.

But on the whole, the journalism and the interviewee both seemed excellent. Check it out if you have an hour to smare (the 10 minute interview went on for an hour :lolol:).

I saw the chat with him on BBC Breakfast yesterday and he is such a brilliant talker. Despite his job with Sky Sports he mentioned clubs like Derby County, Wigan Athletic and Bury (RIP) needing money filtered down to try and save them because more clubs could go to the wall with the Covid lockdown after-effects and winter energy prices - Mansfield playing their matches at 1pm on a Saturday to save a lot of electricity and gas. Extremely sensible 👏

There isn't anyone better at saying it how it is. The Qatar World Cup should be about respecting western values rather than the other way round and visitors not being thrown in jail for drinking alcohol in public or the LBGTS group frightened of holding hands from same-sex relationships are examples.

What a breath of fresh air Neville is from the likes of Lineker, Shearer, Souness or Richards. If he wants to go into politics then good luck to him. A simply brilliant football pundit first and foremost though..

I don't always agree with him but I really like Gary Neville. He was fantastic in his reaction to the super league. I genuinely think he cares about people as well.

Heard a little this afternoon and had to listen again. Only heard part two and will listen to part one later.
Talks a lot of sense, pity those in charge will never listen to him.

Spoken more sense than anyone we’ve had in Government for a very long time

I prefer the Danish third shirt for mourning response to the Qatari World Cup. I can't believe people will support this tournament. $$$$

I don't always agree with what he says but he's a fantastic pundit and commentator. Big asset to the Labour party

Certainly a very good communicator. Great on Super league but disagree on world cup. If say England,Germany, France and others refused to go to Qatar and Russia because of human rights issues more likely to make an impact. Reporters in Qatar hardly likely to be preaching how wrong so many things are when they are over there.
It stinks that world cup is in Qatar and balls countries saying they are best able to put there views when taking part.

Once they chose Qatar we should have pulled out of the tournament. You never know, some other countries might have followed our lead and made an example of both FIFA and Qatar.

He's a thorn in the side of the conservative government and of those committing injustice everywhere. Well done Gary. Continue to be a positive force for change.

Which they won't do at all, of course. The mealy-mouthed Southgate was saying things like "We will educate ourselves about Qatar once we've qualified" but FFS, how long have we known where this World Cup was going to be held? I don't expect anything from him apart from excuses for appalling England performances. All the major footballing nations should have announced a boycott, and there is enough proof of corruption in the award of the competition to Qatar for them to have funded a legal challenge to the process if they had had the guts.
