I have been thinking about getting one for months now. I'm in my car on my own 90% of the time. Its suppose to lower your insurance premium?

It is well worth having a Dashcam, so much absolute nonsense happens on the road and it's important to capture it and force the hand of anyone behaving terribly. A BMW swerved in and out of traffic on a road with one lane on each side and almost caused two or three head on crashes. I had to undertake dramatic breaking to prevent one of the head on collisions, I gave him somewhere to get out of the way. I reported it and provided the footage and I believe this joker will be punished to the full extent of the law.

Without the dashcam footage, it would have been a warning at best. I'm not sure the guy can be hung, drawn and quartered, but I hope so.

A big yes from me, I am shocked how fast oncoming cars go though what is a small gap in the road when I or they are passing a parked car. One day they’ll clip me and I expect the dashcam to prove that it was their fault, due to the speed they are travelling

Police 'strongly' advised me to get one when I had an incident right outside the Amex (hit a pedestrian but entirely his fault, luckily there were plenty of witnesses)................I still haven't got round to it. Thanks to the OP for the prompt...............

The only thing that’s gone up more than claims is the sheer volume of liars now on the roads these days. Probably worth getting therefore.

100% yes everyone should have one.

Have the police (as some forces did) stop pratting around insisting that once you'd submitted dashcam evidence, they would have to keep the dashcam until after the trial (and probably any appesals)? I know at one time a lot of people were put off having dashcams - or certainly at least using them to report bad driving to the police.
The police in those forces, I believe, didn't want all the paperwork involved - too much time and trouble apparantly.

Four or five years ago I was in a car with a mate on our way to help out an elderly friend with their garden. Rounding a corner on a country road we saw a big Audi coming towards us. My mate braked, steered onto the verge, scraping against a hedge and the Audi (which took zero evasive action except braking too, didn't go onto the verge or anything) hit us. Well. Rolled into us. Meeting speed was less than 5 mph, no airbags went off, no visible damage except on my mate's car from the hedge.

Mr Audi clearly thought he was onto a winner. Two blokes in tatty clothes, the car we were in a bit of a banger, and my mate who has had a lot of challenges in life not responding great to the confrontation that followed and going totally into his shell when he was accused of driving too fast, not paying attention, not braking properly, making the idiot late for an important business meeting and lost earnings etc etc.

I took photos of the scene and the "damage", insurance details were swapped and soon after he got an insurance call saying Mr Audi had claimed thousands for a replacement bumper and all sorts of other rubbish claiming he was a victim of reckless driving. My mate contested liability, and eventually, after about a year, won.

So much angst and pain though, all of which could have been solved with a simple dash cam. So yes, I'm a big fan and wouldn't be without one now.

I have one but they could be a bit of a double edged sword because whilst it catches others’ near misses etc, it also records your own location, road position, speed and driving abilities. Overall a positive because I have had some near misses that weren’t down to me.

I've been looking at them for a while now. I want one that is discreet and good at night time. Records in 1080p minimum

I've not looked at brand new cars recently but do manufacturers offer dashcams as an optional extra these days?

I'll be driving within the next couple of months and it is most definitely on my shopping list.
Even as a pedestrian I can see how many morons are on the road and how handy the footage could be if/when I have my first accident......unless it's me who causes the accident. There's a delete button, right?

Don't hold your breath. Exactly this happened to me (well wifey was driving but anyway...); car coming the other way at speed swerved round a parked car and knocked our wing mirror off. We stopped, he didn't. Checked dashcam, got his reg (his car wasn't taxed either btw) and went down the police station to report it.
Police declined to prosecute him for failing to stop or failing to report, merely passed our details on to him to deal with it through insurance.
