Neighbours the long running & much loved Aussie soap is going to end this year because channel 5 is not renewing it & no other funding source can be found .

I was quite late to the party as I never watched it in the States but it was popular when I first came to the UK. I enjoyed the plot lines. Yes they were silly and the acting was on a par with the young and the restless back home which take it from me isn’t a compliment ! But I will miss it . It’s a lot less depressing than Eastenders which has if possible even worse acting .

Any one else a fan ?

I used to LOVE neighbours. One of my earliest TV memories is when Madge disappeared on some beach, only to reappear years later.
I stopped watching it about 7-8 years ago, not because I stopped liking the show but I just had more important things to do be doing at the time and never bothered to delve back in to it (same with me and Eastenders).
I hope the last episode they will try and bring back as many of the ex cast as possible.

Also I dont know if he still does music, but if you get the chance to see Dr. Karls band (The waiting room) I would strongly suggest going. Its a good laugh.

Isn't this a sign of the times? Neighbours to me has always been popular amongst teenagers, certainly that was when I used to watch it (Natalie Imbruglia/Beth ) and I haven't done so for over 20 years now. Most people who are nostalgic about it seem to reminisce about Neighbours being at it's best at whatever time they were teenagers and teenagers don't really watch regular TV anymore do they?

I am a kid of the 80s and everyone at school watched neighbours. The wedding, Jim Robinson heart attack, the Kennedy family arriving and no one sure if they fancied Libby, then Brett and danni turning up with Cheryl and everyone fancied danni. Brad and Beth love story. Lou carpenter the love rival. The allesi twins and the fun with Paul Robinson.

I bet most people about 43 years old will remember all those stories. My kids are 11,11,13 and won’t have these same shared memories. They will have tik tok dances etc.

Most Australian character was Doug Willis. He was the ultimate fair dinkum Aussie with his Ute. Only rival for most Aussie Aussie in soap history is Alf Stewart but that is a different chat.

Yes, I stand corrected, you're right. (I was 4-5 yo when that was aired ) And then Harold came back with amnesia and eventually hooks back with Madge. It is all coming back to me now!

Absolutely gutted. Was a big fan in the 80s, and started watching it again a couple of years ago. It's a daily bit of sun and joy for me so will miss it badly. Really surprised Channel 5 are letting it go given it gets 1.5million viewers. Can't be much else on their channel that gets that. It's the only reason I ever put channel 5 on.

Also surprised ITV didn't try and get it as seemed like a good fit to slot in ahead of their revamped news at 6pm.

I remember watching it in the mid/late 80s and wondering why all the houses had an extra flimsy door. It wasn't until I lived out there that I found out that it was to keep all the bugs out.

I visited the road (not the set) when I visited Melboune. Wasn't worth the drive!

I heard that Harold agreed to come back for the final episode, and that Jason & Kylie are being approached (doubt they will appear though)

Used to love Neighbours - much like everyone else it was at its zenith during my teen years. Never watch it these days though as too much family stuff to be doing! My kids (15 & 19) have never even heard of it!

And like most others...it was full of those young Aussie girls I fancied the pants off. Always a Beth & Steph Scully fan myself....

I used to love neighbours. I'm pretty sure I did a school project on the scott and charlene wedding.

Haven't seen it for nearly 20 years now though but it's still sad to see it go, it was always a ray of antipodean sunshine.

Yup, and ACGS apparently cheaper to make (as well as being local).

From what I read, the problem with Neighbours wasn't the ratings. It was the huge cost to produce it. Channel 5 has been funding that for a long time now, I'm guessing it's now reached a tipping point where even they are now struggling to justify the cost. It would only take a small shift down in viewer numbers and up in cost for it to become an easy decision to make. Especially when you've got highly successful local productions doing better numbers.
