I just read that Ukraine claim 5,700 Russian troops have been killed so far. Surely that is bullshit? It’s more US soldiers than were killed in the whole of the Iraq war. If that figure is anywhere near true, then I can't imagine public opinion back in Russia is going to be supportive for very long.

Probably a bit over estimated as is the fog of war, but in 10 minutes on night 2 they shot down 2 paratroop transporters each with 100 spetznaz, and in the chechan route the other night, that was a 58 tank convoy, and thats just by Kyiv in 2 incidences.

The russian troops are being used as cannon fodder

Yep, including the SBU (Ukrainian MI6).

I heard someone on the radio suggesting maybe the West should offer him a way out, via moving him to location for him to live out his life with his family/

Will just be the start, even if they are overrun, there are lots and lots of AK47's in Eastern Europe and a long term guerrilla war will kill a lot more Russians, especially if arms keep coming over from Poland etc..

Anyone remember how things went with that Country that Russia invaded in 1979?

My view is that he expected the West to crumble after the amount of interference he’s caused in the last 5 or 6 years. However if anything Europe is closer and more steely eyed than ever. He couldn’t (I don’t think many of us could) predict just how biblical the rest of the world has been regards sanctions. He thought that our greed and softness would prevent such sanctions being implemented. I mean, Switzerland shrugging of the shroud of neutrality to implant some **** off sanctions is an eye opener.
To say he has badly misread the room would be an understatement of biblical proportions.

I'm quite shocked at the Swiss moving so quickly (and I spent much of my career in private banking) - there's absolutely TONS of Russian oligarch money in Switzerland.............'it's perfectly safe there, they stay neutral and don't get involved'

I think we have to consider that the Russian attitude towards the death of a soldier is different to that in other cultures. Life is seen as collateral damage and the individual in Russian society is of far less value than the State. In the West, the opposite is true.

Russians would drop weapons on targets even if it meant that some of their own resources were depleted. This was very much the psyche in WW2 when troops were often sent into situations to die with little consideration. In fact, many Russian troops who were taken prisoner (and if they survived the Nazis) were treated very harshly on their return to Russia. Knowing such a fate awaited them, they would often rather die in battle than be captured.

It's 75-years later, but it does take a long time for ingrained cultural behaviours to shift.

Still, the numbers are unverified and it's a different age. I'm just sharing it as a perspective.

parents are still wondering what happened to their children who went to war in Chechnya, Georgia etc, apparently the official party line was there were a lot of deserters and soldiers that deserted !!

Very sad the need to lie to the Russian public about the expendable youth.

I understand your comment and agree, but I am conflicted, in that he has to sound confident and have an air of bluster and showmanship about him during this whole nasty business, Putin already thinks we are weak, so we must have an air of confidence about us, even if we all know it is for show.
