Well?

This isn't politics.

its getting that way though. is there a club stance on the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency?

where do we want the line, keep politics out of sport or an integral part?

Like many on here, I don't know what the Barber has said about Ukraine, so I can't vote with any confidence.

What has he said?

It's remarkable how whenever the club does anything good it's all down to the saintly Bloom and Ashworth, and whenever it's bad, it's the nasty old Paul Barber solely to blame

He's paid very good money to take the s***

Likewise.....OP comes across as a cheap (and unnecessary) shot at PB

He’s not the only one ….over the weekend another poster said he’d had an exchange of emails with PB which they said showed him in a poor light, I’m still waiting for a reply to my post asking what the exact questions/answers were :moo:

Just out of interest, what EXACTLY would you be hoping they would do ?

There are a number of things they could do. Wembley, for example, lit the arch in yellow and blue, subtle but poignant.

The digital hoarding around the pitch could have occasionally shown the Ukrainian flag for instance.

It’s simply a matter of showing that the people of Ukraine are in our minds. Maybe organise a Red Cross collection for the next match.

I’m not looking for the club to get directly involved, just to reflect how we all feel about what is happening in Ukraine.

He got it badly wrong.

It is reported that he described the situation as "political" - so the club would support no protest - in a reply to a fan before the weekend.

It is not about "politics". It is about decency and humanity.

Politics is always in sport. Whether it's cricketers to apartheid South Africa or a million other examples of where they overlap.

I think the club should condemn the actions of Putin. Yes, it would do nothing in practice, but let's represent the values of the club to the world.

As for where do you draw the line? Let's not think about that. Let's try and do the right thing

You don't know that, 1 person has said that without any proof.

It also did not stop fans doing anything - and barely anyone did. Surely us of all fans know that we don't need to wait for the club to do something. Just lazy / empty gesture to make people feel better IMO

The problem with removing shirts, showing allegiance etc is that where do the EPL, FA, UEFA, FIFA define what is acceptable support and what isn't?

As someone mentioned there are many wars, disputed territories and humanitarian disasters around the World but we, in the West, don't see them all the same. 5,000 children die every day through a lack of clean water and nutrition, but we don't really acknowledge that, with the exception of a Friday night comedy fest or Pudsey, in part. There are disputed territories but i don't think we'd allow McAllister to show his support for Las Malvinas, and the problem the governing bodies have is they don't know when people will make their points, and about what.

Clearly we should support Ukraine, and I have employees there, so it is very close to my heart and mind, but maybe it's the governing bodies who should drive what action is necessary, desired or needed, not individual clubs.

I'd want to see the emails and the full conversation for context before voting here.

Well yes, of course I don't know.

Someone reported it on NSC. I guess they must have been lying ?

To be honest I've more important things to do right now than spend time assessing posts on NSC for the truth.

I have heard from my source that Barber has written a speech which is being printed out as I type. Once it’s finished being printed, it will be shipped to Kyiv and used to barricade against tanks.

Just because something is difficult, doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. Russia is a nuclear super power invading a sovereign European state. The stakes here couldn't be higher. I don't disagree there are other conflicts, disputes, humanitarian crises and disasters, but is the solution to turn a blind eye to them all because we haven't previously acted? Is inaction due to too many other conflicts an acceptable reason not to take the opportunity to continue to send a message how unacceptable this invasion has been so that every Russian with any power or wealth feels the pinch, whether their property, bank account, business, football or sports team.

Nothing wrong with making “people feel better”.

Bozza has changed the banner at the top of this forum - why? I presume that it is because he wants to show his support for the Ukrainian people, (I’m sure he’ll soon correct me if I’m wrong). It also implicitly shows that other members of the forum are of similar mind.

A similar display could have been on the big screens on Saturday if the club had had a mind to do so.

.

My point is - there is nothing stopping anyone doing any kind of gesture they like - but if you expect another person or organisation to do something on your behalf you might be disappointed.

What exactly do you expect them to do? Ban vodka from the 1901 bars and Dickies?

It's a slippery slope for the club to start getting involved in politics. What's next, China? Johnson? Brexit?

True, but l think taking a stance against Russia is a pretty much safe bet, almost the entire world is behind Ukraine right now.

I wouldn’t be surprised that the club aren’t doing something re helping out in some way. But not making a song or dance about it. Maybe something in the community.

Given the huge global appeal of the PL it was an opportunity missed to show the clubs solidarity with the people of Ukraine, all of these games are beamed around the world and that will include Russia itself. This is a war going on in our continent and even from a selfish point of view the implications of all of this could be massive for us and our futures.
