Really? When the bottom has dropped out of the EFL market? Yes, our buy/develop tosell policy was formulated pre-Covid, when we could reasonably expect to sell players who didn't make it to our first team to Championship clubs for £2 or £3 or even £4M. Post Covid I suspect we've barely got that for Gyokeres, Longman and Walton between them. Many Championship (and SPL) clubs haven't got a million quid to spend on a player!

Yes we did well with White, made a profit (albeit a disappointingly small one) on BDB, and of course we've had some major flops (Jahanbakhsh, Locadia, Andone) - but we've got 20 odd young players out on loan. Clearly there's no chance of all of them becoming Albion first teamers, and they're certainly not all going to be te next Ben White in terms of transfer value. But the model will have been predicated on making a reasonable and sustainable profit on the majority of these players, and Covid has knocked a huge hole in the market.

We've paid more for some of these youngsters (Sima and Kozlowski for example) than we got for Gyokeres, Longman and Walton combined!

You dont need to make a profit on the majority of the players. Thats not the model. It wont work out: there is no club in the world where a profit is made on the majority of the players.

In the last five years Ajax has made a transfer profit of ca £400m. In each of these seasons, the where more players who left for free than were sold.

Most investments wont be profitable. If two of the twenty players out on loan turn into £50m players, the club will earn more money than if all 20 of them turn into £3m players.

Agree.

The model is based around finding a jackpot player, like Ben White, which you only really need to do every 3 or 4 seasons to break even. In the mean time you get to play them for a season or so and you get to advertise the pathway to other prospects

And you can add in, that there may well be sell on clauses on players like Longman or Gyokeres, so if one of them does make the big time, we'll get a chunk to further offset the majority we will make a loss on

This, with bells on. I had typed out something to make the same point, but this does it so much better than what I'd written!

Not played a lot (mostly due to injuries) and I would imagine the buy option was a pretty hefty sum since he is young and talented, so no big surprise that they are unlikely to use that option.
For me one of the big problems with our loanees this year is the number of injuries.
Along with Karbownik, there's Sima, Mitoma, Kozlowski and Richards all who are injured and need game time this season if they are to get a sniff of making the first team squad for next year.

Talk about picking individuals to fit your narrative :lolol: There will always be flops……but we’re evidently moving away from the Locadia-type market and mostly buying younger prospects with potentially much higher headroom for increasing their value (and less downside if they do flop)
Disappointingly small profit on BDB ? What do you define as small ? (Bear in mind his costs will have been largely amortised now as well). £5-10m perhaps ?
Ben White paid for the establishment of the academy in a single deal….the club don’t need many products or developed players like that to come off - for example big profits very likely in the summer from the sale of Biss and possibly Lamptey (I hope not obviously but if they go the club will be making money)
As others have already pointed out the market seems to be recovering. All or some of the costs of the players out on loan will be covered
Anything on Transfermarkt is likely to be BS by the way.

Good debate this. I'm fully in favour of the policy the club is pursuing - just think it will be hit harder by the effect of Covid on the likes of Championship and SPL clubs than others, such as yourself, think. I do think we'll take a couple of hits this summer, with speculative (well, not exactly speculative - they were obviously carefully researched) buys going for little or nothing though.

Talk about picking individuals to fit your narrative :lolol: There will always be flops……
'To fit my narrative' - that's hardly fair! I said we had some flops - and named them!

Small is defined in this case as selling him for a price that has Newcastle fans gleefully rejoicing that they've mugged us off! In other words, too cheap...........

All or some of the costs of the players out on loan will be covered.
Yes, I know there are sometimes loan fees, and some or all of the wages paid. That would have been a decent wedge sending, for instance, Duffy to Celtic - but I doubt if we'd get very much for an untried teenager going out to a lower leagie or SPL team to get some experience - we might even be paying them for the experience!

Anything on Transfermarkt is likely to be BS by the way.
Yes I know - that's why I made it clear that my figures came from that not entirely reliable source!

Anyway, it's going to be an interesting summer seeing how many of our 20 odd loanees depart for good - and, as far as we can ever get the facts, how much we get for them. Just hope they all have massive sell-on clauses!

Half the issue for us is we never know anyway…..virtually everything is ‘undisclosed’….all we can do is wait for the accounts and some DULLARD to bore us with the detail :lolol:

Indeed, very similar to the betting business Tony runs as I understand it, value bets, get a win often enough and at the right price to cover the 3 bets that lost.

Another of our young hopefuls heading out on loan for the rest of the season - Sam Packham off to Bohemians in the League of Ireland Premier Division. Good luck to him over there in Dublin! Added to the list of loanees (https://www.northstandchat.com/show...ad-2021-22&p=10160053&viewfull=1#post10160053) in post#449.

Also young Tommy Reid (GK) out and about again - this time at Worthing. Duration of loan unknown. Kept a clean sheet there the other day.

Van Hecke and Khadra both playing for Blackburn tonight and on Sky. They both look to have potential - he can be a bit headless chicken but Khadra is VERY fast and took a mean free kick(still over the bar but…..)

Our boys are going for it:

“90'
Post update
Offside, Blackburn Rovers. Jan Paul van Hecke tries a through ball, but Reda Khadra is caught offside.”

Hopefully they’ll nick a winner.

Those two [Khadra and Van Hecke] + £10 million [for Brereton-Diaz]? Not that it'd ever happen, but I'd snap their hands off. Van Hecke will be a Dutch international one day. He's quick, reads the game well, isn't bad on the ball, and has a body consisting of nothing but sinews and muscle.

I think they like him a bit ..............................

Unfortunately for them we currently have a need for a CB or two..

I know this is the wrong thread maybe
But with Ostigard Clarke Van Hecke & Roberts in waiting
I truly believe it was one of the reasons for Burns departure
Which was in the current market a better deal for the Toon than us imho
We sold DB too cheaply especially to a team in desperate need
