Bloody Worthing!
Ninja Elephant, late of these parts, turned up at Worthing today and did pretty well. Not quite as well as two very young 11-14 girls (twins I think) who unwisely I thought lined up right at the front of the pack looking very vulnerable. They then glided to sub 19, top 10 finishes (400 running) with AGs well into the mid 80%s. What do I know?

20.59 for me was OK and for the first time I edged out Tom Ulliot - who is making a comeback after injury, so it didn't really count. Had a chat to him (and the ninja) at the end and he seems like a top bloke. AG was 81.41% in distinctly breezy conditions. Nice to beat the youngsters in the 55-59 and 60-64 categories and come 2nd to a kid of 50-54.

Anyone manage (or even try) to grab a pair of the Nike Streakfly when they released, and were available for about 3 seconds, yesterday morning?

I expect there will be people showing them off and seeing what they can do at Park Run next Saturday morning.

I’m a bit confused by them. Less foam, no carbon, only partial plate. They lose a tiny bit of weight and become more stable. But overall I can’t see how they won’t just be slower than Vaporfly or Alphafly, no matter the distance?!

Good time on a windy course. That AG, low for you, is a sub 20 for me. Last seen well over 10 years ago. Nike need to come up with some faster shoes.

Walking jogging going well. 5 miles of running 10" miles on Friday. Hip then jams for a couple of days but I'm working on the stretching and strengthening. Achilles 10/10 which is enough to keep me positive.

Seems Nike managed to get them delivered to a lof of folk on Sunday, and Ed Budd seems quite impressed with them from his initial run.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rm-L6dAK6yI

In other news I hit my two-year runstreak yesterday. To celebrate I did two of my favourite runs - the trails up to Cissbury Ring in the lovely sunshine, and a later road run down to the seafront. On the latter wore my Vaporflys for the first time - I've had them for nearly 10 months and not worn them. As someone who doesn't race, it was a bit of a silly purchase really!

I don't have the leg freshness or, frankly, the fitness to try for a 5km, 10km or HM PB, but just wanted to really enjoy the run. I gave them a good go through Tarring and then along the seafront. Through Tarring I got a 2nd all-time on a segment, and along the seafront I set my half-mile, KM and mile bests according to Strava.

If my maths is correct, I've racked up 5604 miles over the two years, which feels decent for an injury-prone chubby old bloke! Onto year three...

knocky1 my 22:13 from the other week doesn't seem to have been recognised ;-)

Any tips on knee pain, anyone, as I seem to keep getting it after about 10k recently, even though my mileage has been reduced slightly due to recent colds. Could be the cold weather? Though am wearing tights.

knocky1 I have a 19:30 (70.51%) from 8th January to put a marker on the board for this season.

Set myself a rather lofty goal of going sub-18 this season. I really need to find a way to up the mileage massively if that's to happen.

Wanted to put a quick time on the board this week, but oh my, the wind!

My max HR seems to have lost almost 10 beats in the last few weeks, whilst it certain feels like I've been going all out. I'm not sure if it's a dodgy HR strap or valid. Will try a different strap for the next few runs.

Could be tight quads but if on outside of knee may be Illiotibal Band tightness.
For the first lie face down on floor bring heel up to butt whilst holding in your core. Hold for 10 seconds but don't push through pain. Stretch felt across front of thigh.
Seated pigeon for the second.

Had time to edit table above for both of you. Need an AG% for Notters.

Definitely the inside! Weirdly my right knee on Wednesday and my left yesterday.
Slightly concerned it's the 860s, which have otherwise been great.
Just tried the above and its certainly the front of the thigh that is now sore.

Thank you!

I found using resistance bands before runs to be very helpful as I got over some knee issues at the end of last year.

Looks like I'm finally able to start a month of Base training. It's been a long time.
The plan is to run around 9:00 to 10:00 minute mile pace starting at 15-20 miles a week and then adding 10% a week.
Will look for grassy Parkruns, East Brighton perhaps Saturday, and carefully play with upping the pace in them.

I'm going to be running stat-less for a couple of weeks. I've just shipped my running watch to Romania for repairs, and my Casio needs a visit to Timpsons for a new battery.

How will I cope?!

You can always use your phone, after all if it's not on Strava, did it really happen?! ??? Some of the Strava runs I've seen from a phone are incredible, a 5km jog gets turned into an ultra marathon with world records being set across many segments

Running in its purest form.

We could all probably benefit from putting the gadgets aside and see improvements by running to feel. Listen to the body. Time & effort, not distance & pace.

Good news. Looking forward to positive updates.

You steered me towards joining a club which I did and I've now done a couple of evening training sessions. I now wished I'd have done it years (about 35) ago. I think the main benefit is that whereas when you train solo you can always opt out/slow down/take it easier, but when you are training with others the peer pressure pushes you just that bit harder. Especially when some of the peers are young enough to be your kids.

Think I'll have a crack at Southsea parkrun - a bit like Worthing but the wind is generally on your back in the first half. Cheers!

I nearly always use my phone. Because I'm not a serious runner, my watch is an Apple Watch so nothing fancy in terms of running metrics, although there are apps like WorkOutDoors which, by all accounts, are very, very good - https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/workoutdoors/id1241909999

Because of having lost runs, or part of runs, before, I always start both my watch and my phone so I have two "recordings". Assuming nothing has gone wrong I stick with the phone as that was done natively in Strava so is already there - nothing more for me to do.

However...

...although I am always "with gadget" it's primarily for recording the run once I'm finished, not monitoring it as I'm going. I rarely monitor my pace whilst I'm out and because I run many of the same roads, trails and routes, I think I'm pretty accurate in knowing how far I've run without having to check.

And, again, as I don't train for races and the like, I can afford to just make each run up as I go along - I've got no plan to try and keep aligned with.

Glad you're enjoying the club training. Looks like you're going to get even faster.
I'll avoid club training for at least a month as I have to build up the miles first. Looking forward to chasing the Gasson round Withdean in early Spring though.
Just got a new neighbour who has already challenged me to a Parkrun. A young 64 whippet type bloke. If I manage to avoid a showdown for 2 more weeks I should have enough to better him. Good pressure though.

Well done: back with an age cat win. And a new opponent too.

Southsea was very windy. Quite a big turnout of 404. 21.34 for me and times were generally a lot slower than you'd see at Worthing. Hence my 79% AG was the best in the field - and the next best was a modest 73%. The wind wasn't THAT strong.

I'm enjoying the club sessions but my knee isn't.

Well done AG Boss and snap regarding the knee. Had17 mile comeback week. Achilles ✔ hip ✔ but knee needed 4 ice sessions yesterday. Think it is now OK.
Yesterday was only 3 secs faster than Xmas day and must be due to weariness from the weeks mileage.
Had a good time following Terry in his 70's for 2 laps
But on lap 3 eased past to try to catch the woman in front. Gradually caught up on the final long ascent (new course) and then stepped on the gas for the run in. She did too and despite a sub 6 min mile pace by myself I got left behind in the mud!
Watch that knee!
