Wonderful to have the real Steven Alzate back after a year + in the wilderness.

Genuine contender for a spot when all fit and available on that showing

As the one who started this very excitable thread a few years ago, I was absolutely delighted to see that performance tonight! He was truly excellent, even more impressive after so long out. Well done young man! :clap2:

Yep, he just controlled things tonight. The way he feints, opponents just can't read him. Brilliant.

I said it about MacA, Moder and now Alzate, something is going on behind the scenes that is building confidence in these young players and they’re coming back into the side, whether through injury or being left out, and coming back with real authority, confidence, swagger even. Every player is improving, Alzate the latest to have us on the edge of our seats at the freedom to just play his game that he’s been given. As Hugo said above, wow.

You’d think we had someone who was an expert in emotional intelligence behind the scenes!

I agree totally. Alzate seemed to have that arrogance on the ball back that I was so impressed with when he first broke into the team. Was great to see.

You are right about Mac Allister too. I was always pleased by how positive he was about the club and his situation when he wasn’t playing during an incredibly difficult time for a kid in a new country - he’s been managed superbly and we’re really seeing the benefit now.

It says something about the group when players aren’t afraid to make mistakes, they aren’t afraid to express themselves. Must be a great team to play in. I look at the Ampito Cucurella is involved and he must be absolutely loving the decision he made to join us to play in a team that really does want to play.

Never mind the thread about whether Dunk will get back in the team, Mwepu, Lallana and Bissouma will have a job if our Alzate and MacAllister keep putting in performances like that

Felt like he had been watching Lallana very closely based on that performance. AL would’ve been proud of it.

Very steady performance tonight. Must be difficult, having had such little game time, to start a game like that - but he stepped up to the plate and he never lets the team down.

The thought of a midfield (Bissouma having been sold on for £50M and Gross off to a well deserved semi-retirement at Werder Bremen (It was them mentioned, wasn't it?) left in the hands of Moder, Mac, Alzate, Mwepu (if he's not too much of a loose cannon at times) and Caicedo (if he turns out as good as we think), with Lallana to add a bit of maturity and gravitas when required, fills me with .............................. excitement.

Thought he had a great game, stepped up and looked a confident Premier league quality midfielder. I had wondered in recent weeks where he fits into the team and if he could find himself slipping away from Potter’s plans but absolutely not after that performance

Massive credit to both him and Potter….to step in against a team that strong after so little football and play like that was immense. Hugely encouraging.

Neither here nor there
Alzate goes under the radar a little bit (not least through lack of game time) but he's seriously impressed me since his arrival here, with his ability, which keeps improving, but mainly his calm confidence. He never looks out of his depth.

He's had a tendency, as Lewis Dunk did when he was still evolving as a player, to make the odd potentially costly error, but I didn't see much wrong at all last night. Looked like a natural starter for us in a game against the European Champions.
