Probably the fifth window now that it’s been obvious we have needed another established striker and Incompletely expect none to arrive yet again. I know Welbeck was recruited but he was always going to be out half the time hence him being a post window freebie.

I'm getting mixed signals..

Trossard and Moder had the best chances, which is quite common when you play against someone who played like Palace did last night. Not sure a different striker would have made a massive impact.

But from the last few press conferences from Potter I really do get the impression that they would want another striker coming in before the end of the window. But obviously its only going to happen if they find the right guy and there's not too many strikers who are "the right guy" = someone who needs to be able to improve but is good enough now yet would probably need to accept some bench time. Also needs to have the right personality and playing style.

Think it is 50/50 it will happen or we'll have to wait to the summer. As long as Maupay and Welbeck are fit there's no crisis.

A striker would make a difference. The amount of times the ball was crossed with nobody attacking the ball was, frankly, embarrassing.

As long as Maupay and, especially, Webs is fit is a MASSIVE IF.

Gary Neville made this point after the match. Maupay is good but the type of striker we’re wanting is going to cost £50-60M. Even then the top 6 will attract that striker more than us with European football and far better wages.

Neville is wrong

That makes far more sense than splashing £40-50 million on one player and paying more wages than any other player who could easily get injured and miss the rest of the season. (It happens!)

I think Ferguson is a real prospect and hope he gets more game time this season.

Disagree. One injury to our most injured player and we are ****ed. And why this ridiculous £40-50m figure that nobody thinks we should spend?

Well, let's unpack that.

Potter is now our long term coach. He's not a rookie any more and has had the time that new coaches need, In that time four things are consistently true.

1) We rarely score very many goals or thrash anyone. This season we've only scored three in a match once and that was away.
2) We normally underperform against our xG. And often we actually get three points when our xG is lower.
3) We rarely win at home and this IS going to end up frustrating people. I went with a mate last night who is a STH and used to go away a fair bit too, but has been unable to make as many game this season as normal. The last time he saw us win was against Leicester. We were both saying on the train home that we almost never leave the Amex these days with the warm glow of happiness that comes with a win.
4) Potter has NEVER beaten Palace as a coach.

These are not one off things, these are three year trends. So he is either not being given the tools, not asking for the tools or not using the tools and I think that's why there is still discussion on here about him that you might think he doesn't deserve.

Last night FWIW I thought he was great (mostly) and so were the team. We GOT that it was our rivals. We were WAY better than Palace. The stats show we should have murdered them, Yet we didn't. Again. While Gross was poor that was down to the player IMO - GP can't take penalties for him - so the only real issue for me was the aforementioned sticking on Lamptey to cross and leaving the crossing target on the bench till later.

I think that we are coming at this from different places, whilst I get what you are saying, last season it was effectively “we are not improving in the table from CH’s days, which is the minimum I’ll accept”

Well we have improved this season and as we have a bottom six budget we are currently punching well above our weight imo. The striker problem is exactly that and will not change unless one of our punts come off. As to Lamptey, he doesn’t have to hoik a ball high, he can play it on the ground too, he is capable of getting around players and sending in a low cross. I personally don’t think that he is match fit yet or as confident or as quick as he was before his injury though

We are not going to agree on how good we are now, you are much more demanding than me so I think I’ll leave it there or after your reply

If Welbeck had started I'm reckon there would've have been more success with these as he has the strikers instinct and attacks the ball. Up until he came on not one of our midfielder's managed this.
Also Webster had two very good chances which he somehow managed to head towards the corner flags when maybe Dunk or Duffy might've buried them

From another thread but far more relevant here…

For the boring pricks who are too stupid to still not see it:

I didn’t enjoy the Palace game as much as I should. For the umpteenth time we completely outplayed them but had to scramble for an equaliser. When are Bloom and co going to address the need for a top class striker? How many chances do we have to miss before they do something about it?

The bit about Webby I 100% agree with. This will surprise you/everyone but I DO FEEL we need to get more goals from our midfielders, who in the main couldn’t score in a brothel, and defenders at set pieces.

Well, it's a difficult reply because we are doing far better in the table which is what I asked for, but we're doing it by drawing and by virtue of the fact that there are four absolutely terrible teams in this division this season.

But if you put up one of your infamous polls I wouldn't need a fence option - I'm in and have been probably since about March-ish 2021.

The budget is a red herring. We can afford to spend literally millions on players for the women's team, yet another midfielder, players for the Belgian league and Stoke City and extra seats that aren't being used

I’ve just got a hunch (based on Connolly & Locadia being shipped out) that we’ll have a new 1st team striker by January 31st.

However, the tactics Palace employed normally yield a team a point against us and that’s not likely to change, even if we do sign the star striker we all crave. The answer to beating these teams, sadly, is to field players like De Bruyne, Salah or Lukaku. The only way we’ll be doing that is by buying young punts like Kozłowski or Ferguson and hoping they turn into a top player like White, Lamptey or Bissouma.

We need more than just a ‘body’ but I’m confident the club is working extremely hard on this dilemma and that a player like Brereton-Diaz, Ekitike or Hložek will be with us soon.

Clearly Ferguson is not the answer right now. Mad to be putting so much pressure on a 17 year old. Had Connolly not lost his way and we’d signed at least a semi capable striker he’d be nowhere near the first team. We absolutely love overhyping 17 year old strikers as fans of this club.
The club are clearly looking. We clearly have money and clearly have the ambition to sign someone when the right player comes up but they have to be way more advanced in their footballing career than young Ferguson. Let’s give the kid a chance to progress at his own pace.
I’m confident Mac and Moder will both score 5 goals plus next season and that will be a big help.

Go on then I'll bite. I happen to agree with him.

So what PL team has bought who, for how much, on what wages that you look at and say "we should have got him"

Who did we miss in your opinion?

I really hope you are right. If we are trying, as you say, then fair enough. But it is really hard to assess whether they are because (correctly) they play their cards so close to their chest.

I reckon Neville has more experience of the football world in his little toe nail than bw2. A misérabilist who rants and abuses other fans.
