It was a free transfer according to VFL Bochum's Instagram account. We paid £15m + for him and gave him away years later for free. Not good

Except when you look at:

Phew, what a great start to the day...

Good luck Locadia, thanks for the goal against Millwall and a day out at Wembley, and a few vital goals, keeping us in the EPL.
Some may say a waste of 15 million pounds, but keeping us in the EPL, most would happily pay 15 million alone just for that.

It never worked out, for various reasons, lessons learnt and all that, life is too short to be bitter.

A winning goal against Everton, the equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal, the final goal in the 4-1 over Swansea, which is still our biggest-ever Premier League victory. A brilliantly-taken strike at Millwall that kept us in the Cup and made us think that there must be a player in there after all. So he made a mark of sorts. Shame he wasn't the player the recruitment team thought he was.

That 15 million got us 4 points in a season in which we stayed up by 2 points earning us over £100m, and the memory and excitement of getting to go to Wembley for an FA cup semi-final for the first time in a generation. How many younger folk have experienced that, how many kids solidified as lifetime albion fans because of that cup run.

I'd say that we got a decent return on that 15m + wages.

I don’t want to go all BW2 but we’re now down to Welbeck (always a game away from a serious injury) and Maupay as striker options.

Therefore, I trust the club is going to unveil someone like Hložek this month to fill what could be a huge gap.

Welbeck has had 2 injuries this season , Maupay has been missing briefly and likewise Trossard yet Locadia started no PL matches and Connolly started 1 so it appears that Potter can get by without them. That said whether he should or whether incoming is planned is another matter. Clearly Ferguson is going to get more match day squad experience at the very least (but he’s still only 17 and has never played senior football)

Remember this next time you hear someone say we have to get a striker in the January transfer window.

Yes, I remember Potter getting by during the 3 month non-winning streak!

Welbeck, Maupay and Trossard are all brilliant imho BUT (big but) I think we need 6 players in those attacking positions (happy to include Sarmiento in that) to cover for injury and loss of form as well as putting pressure on those three for starting positions. Ferguson looks such a good prospect but I really don’t want his young shoulders burdened with our goal scoring responsibilities. We have the Mac too but he is surely a No.10 rather than a player who can play all across the front line such as a Hložek or Larin.

What I would say is that the club will deny we are looking for a striker up to the moment they sign one, no point in giving the agents that tactical advantage, no point at all.

It will be a risky bit of brinkmanship to assume we'll get no injuries, covid, or suspensions between now and the end of the season.

Yup.

Getting back to winning (and scoring) pretty much coincided with the return of Welbz and our early points rush this season was also with him fit. Without him we had to rely on Maupay scoring or Trossard as a false 9.

Maupay needs support and competition. The squad really, really needs a good third striker.

We won't get one though.

Exactly. Many forget the vital role Welbeck played in our 3 points away at Everton

You could argue that his being on the bench did play a vital role, since we could have mixed it up at any time if Maupay wasn't performing or we needed to add a third forward in a different formation.

DJ Strollabout and Shit Haircut Man do not give you that option.

They never really rule out getting a striker. They like to have it both ways which as you say is the right thing to do given agents/PR etc. They say they are confident with their existing options , but at same time say the squad can always improve but has to be right player / right price - which of course might be harder in January. (In fact Potter pretty much said this at the press conference this lunchttime)

Unfortunately just another in the line of Albion costly dud buys.

Fortunately we seem to be balancing them out with some good ones - White , Lamptey , etc.

and Trossard, Moder, Mwepu, Maupay, Bissouma, Cucurella, Burn, Veltman, Webster, etc etc

What is this line of "costly dud buys" ? . Its Locadia (4 years ago), and Ali J (nearly 4 years ago ) isn't it ?
