There's a pointless middle company, but ultimately it's Brighton council tax payers who pay for our bins to be collected. At some point that will go out to tender again and higher staffing costs will feed into the bids for that which will mean that above inflation wage increases are going to affect the council's already highly depleted funds
The job quite appealed to me when I was a kid and they were allowed to hang off the back of the truck as it moved between houses and streets. Doesn't seem quite so appealing now that is prohibited.
A very profitable and powerful middle company, untouchable with a £1B contract from 2003 to 2033.

Very good. It's Thursdays here, and I have no real issue with our rubbish/recycling collection at all. Anyway, £19k for a 32.5 hour week starting at 7am and surrounded by filth doesn't exactly seem to me to be a kings random.
I wonder how much that compares to bin men in other home county areas? And I wonder whether there is more to it than money? If the council have contracted out to an abusive company for a bulletproof 30 year period, I'd probably want to know who saw sense in awarding the contract in the first place.
But an estate agent whines about striking for a pay rise without bothering to look deeper into it - the implication is clearly that he resents "our wonderful binmen" asking for more money. Would he work for £19k doing that sort of job? Er, no.
And it's worth noting that when it suits Brexiteers like him to infer that taking back control is actually a good thing because it means higher wages (see HGV driver shortages as an example), that doesn't apply if the process to get those higher wages (now that we don't have a supply of Romanians to do this job) involves strike action and his bins not being collected. Funny that.

how on earth can you sign a contract that ties you to a deal for 30 years , involving a utility that is unsure , and expect the garbo's to play along. in 2003 the average house price was under 250 k it is now in excess of 450 k , so in 2030 it could well be over 600k , add the price of fuel and general cost of living and a billion isn't going far , it's really not rocket science .....your council is dumb.
Exactly. Or at least it was in 2003. I honestly don't know who ran the council back then but whoever did so had no business handing them a contract like that.

Brilliant. A couple of weeks of not being woken up to the lazy tossers swearing loudly and then not taking half the rubbish with them. In the 6+ years I've lived at this address, there's never been a collection morning that hasn't been greeted with "for **** sake, all this ****ing rubbish. **** it, let's go." And when you complain, nothing gets done other than different people come and collect what the other lazy ******** wouldn't.

yes .....exactly. Amounts to around 12 pounds an hour and because they are a casual employer and no doubt do not pay pension/sick or leave pay ( i could be wrong there)...pick your own shit up....!!

we are a family of 5 , our rubbish bin is virtually empty on a weekly basis and our recycling bin 150 lt is 3/4 full fortnightly max ....perhaps dumb****s need to update the refuse mode.....i mean everything else seems to be readily updatable , why not your garbage foot print....it's gotta go somewhere ...!!

It was all the rage under New Labour. Pretty sure they ran the council back then too.
I'm not a binman, but if I were I like to think this is EXACTLY the sort of binman I'd be.
I don’t know when this contract was signed but if it was pre local election it was a Labour majority council, if after it was a Labour minority run council.
