in no particular order

To kill a mockingbird Harper Lee

Norwegian wood Haruki Murakami

The black dahlia James Ellroy

Birdsong Sebastian Faulks

The subtle knife Phillip Pullman

If you asked me tomorrow, I would probably come up with another 5 with ease, I am reading The girl with the dragon tattoo by Stieg Larrson and it shaping up brilliantly to be my read of the year

Interesting to see that a few children's books are in peoples lists. For me it is down to the fact that I used to love reading when younger. I have a friend who is a head teacher at a primary school. She tells me that some children arrive at the school not even knowing which way up a book goes.

My soon-to-be 2 year old already has books that he loves, books that he hates and ones that he can live with. He will sit and read (or at least look through the book as though he is reading it) by himself for ages.

I try and buy him new books every week since for me it is important that he grows up not just knowing how to read but also enjoying reading.
All children love stories and the best ones come from books (not T.V) My four year old loves books his current favourites are the Hairy McLary from Donaldson's dairy stories by Lynley Dodd

they are brilliant!

Same again, first five that spring to mind:

'Eureka Street' by Robert McLiam Wilson
1984 by George Orwell (strange one cos I didn't necessarily enjoy the actual book so much as think the themes in it are so striking)
'The Woman in Black' by Susan Hill

And EVERYONE should read the following:
'It's Not About the Bike' & 'Every Second Counts' by Lance Armstrong
'Back From the Brink' by Paul Mcgrath
