If you're the social type then pick a few of the younger people in the office (as the older ones are likely to slope off home to the wife and kids) and invite them out for drinks the first night.

If you're not the social type then gym/swimming pool/books/walking as per your preference. Or pick a side project: if you keep going back to the same country perhaps try to learn the language?

I used to do a lot of overseas travel for work, Seoul, Singapore, Damascus, UAE, Bahrain, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Milan, Malta etc. etc.

People used to say how envious there were, and how wonderful it must have been, but to be honest, I was spending a lot of time away from home, and I would spend a lot of time on my own. Although I used to make an effort to get out and about in the evenings, it could become pretty boring (with the exception of Hong Kong, which was never boring!)

I guess these days with iPads etc. there's more to watch etc., but even so I'm glad I don't have to do it any more.

Don't stay in a soulless chain hotel - find a good local B&B - located somewhere that is pleasant to be based and do a deal with them for a long term regular occupancy. It will probably work out no more expensive - or even cheaper.

I'm rather biased in offering this advice as me and the Mrs have run a B&B for 5 years. We've had a number of long term regulars during that time and they all welcome having a friendly face to come back to and the chance to have a chat and even go for a beer from time to time. Being in a village we're also a quick stroll to the village pubs and shops. Effectively we offer a bit of a "home away from home" and many of our former regulars are now friends as well.

anyone work away during the week and stay in hotels??? it bores the shit out of me.... hence y ive posted this!!! anyone on here stay away and what tips to liven it up?
Many moons ago I was based in Manchester for three months, luckily it was towards the end of the football season. So I took in as many games as possible. Managed to watch our beloved Albion at Sheffield Utd., Bolton, and at Bristol Rovers. Along with watching Citeh play Forest at Maine Road.

Bearing in mind this was also before porn channels could be accessed on TV! A certain band were just breaking in Manchester at the time - Joy Division and I missed them. Aargh!! :tantrum:
