Will Buckley spent a number of years in his home-town club Oldham Athletic's Centre of Excellence system, but was ultimately released. He was offered a scholarship at Rochdale in 2007 after being spotted at Hopwood Hall College, where he was undertaking a B-Tech Sports Course.[FOOTNOTE]Hopwood Hall play key role in learning curve Rochdale Observer - 19 February 2008[/FOOTNOTE] He was also appearing for the youth side at non-league Curzon Ashton. By April of 2007 he was appearing for Rochdale's reserve side.[FOOTNOTE]Rochdale Reserves 3-1 United Reserves carlisleunited-mad.co.uk - 18 April 2007[/FOOTNOTE] Despite still being a first year scholar, he impressed in the pre-season games of 2007-08.[FOOTNOTE]Will shows willing Rochdale AFC - 26 Jul 2007[/FOOTNOTE] He progressed in the U-18s and reserves to such an extent that he was awarded his first professional contract in September 2007 (still aged only 17).[FOOTNOTE]Future Looks Brighton For Rochdale Youth greatermanchesteronline.com - 18 December 2007[/FOOTNOTE] He made his first appearance in the league side when Rochdale lost 4-2 at home against Hereford United on February 12th 2008. His first start came in a 1-0 defeat against Wycombe on February 23rd.

In July 2008 Buckley signed a new 2-year contract with the club.[FOOTNOTE]Hill happy as Buckley stays football.co.uk - 27 July 2008[/FOOTNOTE] He was not involved in the first 4 games of the campaign but then made 7 consecutive league starts. His first goal came at Rotherham in a 2-2 draw on September 13th 2008. In January 2009 Buckley was named by The Times newspaper in an article about rising stars in the game.[FOOTNOTE]Football's top 50 rising stars Times Online - 12 January 2009[/FOOTNOTE] Buckley made 37 league appearances during the season, scoring 10 goals. In 2009-10 Buckley scored 3 goals in 15 league appearances before transferring to Watford on a 3 1/2-year deal on January 26th 2010.[FOOTNOTE]Watford complete signing of Rochdale winger Will Buckley Watford Observer - 26 January 2010[/FOOTNOTE]

[H=3][WIKI]Watford[/WIKI][/H]
The initial transfer fee paid by Watford was £200,000 with a clause providing an additional £1,000 for each league appearance, and a sell-on clause of 20%.[FOOTNOTE]Official: Buckley Moves For £1M Watford FC - 6 June 2011[/FOOTNOTE] When Buckley joined Watford his new manager, Malky Mackay said of Buckley:

"Will's an exciting young talent who has impacted upon Rochdale [...] There's a lot of growth and potential in him. [...] Will's an attacking player who is comfortable on either wing and can play up and off a forward as well, he's definitely someone who is attack-minded [...] we don't have the financial luxury of signing players from the Championship and the Premiership on the whole, therefore we need to look to see where the best young talent is coming through in the lower leagues, the Conference and up in Scotland as well."[FOOTNOTE]Growth and Potential Watford FC - 27 January 2010[/FOOTNOTE]

After recovering from a thigh strain, and scoring a goal for the reserves, Buckley made his Watford debut on March 21st 2010 against Cardiff City. He made his full debut in a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough on March 27th. His first goal came against Preston on April 3rd 2010.

During the 2010-11 campaign Buckley made a total of 33 league appearances for Watford in the Championship, scoring 4 goals. He won the club's Young Player of the Season award.[FOOTNOTE]2010/11 Awards: Young Player Of The Season Watford FC - 1 May 2011[/FOOTNOTE] Brighton had two bids for the player rejected by Watford[FOOTNOTE]Watford reject bids for Danny Graham and Will Buckley BBC Sport - 20 May 2011[/FOOTNOTE] before finally securing his transfer on June 6th 2011.[FOOTNOTE]Brighton sign Watford's Will Buckley BBC Sport - 6 June 2011[/FOOTNOTE]

[H=3][WIKI="Brighton and Hove Albion FC"]Brighton & Hove Albion[/WIKI][/H]
The size of the transfer fee reported by both clubs was £1million, with Watford negotiating a sell-on clause of 15%.[FOOTNOTE]Official: Buckley Moves For £1M Watford FC - 6 June 2011[/FOOTNOTE][FOOTNOTE]Albion Sign Buckley in Record Deal BHAFC - 6 June 2011[/FOOTNOTE] However, a blogger on the North Stand Blog site suggested the initial fee was actually shy of £900,000,[FOOTNOTE]Who will be the Albion's first million pound player? North Stand Blog - 13 June 2011[/FOOTNOTE] with a suggestion of add-ons that would potentially bring the final fee to £1million. At any rate, the transfer was, at least in nominal terms, by far the greatest expenditure Brighton had ever made on a player, beating the previous record of £500,000 (this record was originally set over 30 years previously when [WIKI]Andy Ritchie[/WIKI] was signed from Manchester Utd; it was equalled only 17 days before Buckley arrived when [WIKI]Will Hoskins[/WIKI] was transferred from Bristol Rovers). This new record fee was to last for exactly 4 weeks until Brighton signed [WIKI]Craig Mackail-Smith[/WIKI] on July 4th 2011. Rochdale also did well out of the transfer; having received their initial £200,000 fee for Buckley plus £39,000 in appearance-related add-ons, they also received 20% of Watford's profit of £761,000, making a further £152,200.

After a relatively quiet pre-season in 2011, Buckley was named on the bench for Brighton's historic League opener at The Amex. He came on as a 75th minute sub and promptly scored 2 goals to seal a dramatic win against Doncaster. Three days later he was fouled to earn the penalty that gave Albion a 1-0 win against Gillingham in the Carling Cup.

Yes: after the first table tag, enter style="text-align: center" (I added it on this table so you can see).
By the way, I think there's a value missing on the Rochdale totals.

Good work with these. Looks like it's just you and me brakespear!

Also, the 2010-11 totals (taken from his Wikipedia page) are only correct up to March. If you look at the Watford 2010-11 season page, it has figures correct for the whole season.
