King George 6th died and Queen Elizabeth 2nd became our monarch.

I'm the following year, so can claim the Coronation in 1953, about a month before I was born.

And Everest was conquered - just a few days before the Coronation. I guess that's pretty big.

I was in Nepal on a trek a few years ago and read a book by Sherpa Tensing's son. Apparently the locals don't like the idea of a mountain being conquered. They prefer the concept of the mountain working with you and allowing you to climb it, which I think is far more sensible.

As I'm an International Relations student, quite a few things in that respect happened.

Start of the Bosnian war.
Bill Clinton elected, Bush Snr throws up on the Prime Minister of Japan's lap.
The USSR decide to stop pointing their missiles at major Western cities, and the West stop pointing their missiles at Soviet cities.
Algerian civil war
White South Africans vote for political reform to enable multi-racial government.

All this happened because you are an international relations student!? Students have far too much influence.
