What Are The Songs That Make You CRY?

'You are my sunshine', sung properly. None of this jollity which misses the point.

That June Tabor 'Matilda' is a good call, mind.

That's interesting, points well made.
This one used to get to me when I was younger, sympathizing with the singer (one of the greatest vocalists ever! Aside from the expressive guitar)

Greeny could really emote in songs, and you could believe he meant what he was singing.
This sort of thing is why he could even make BB King nervous!

Here's another that feels emotional - but perhaps because Jimi died, and that fact tugs at the heartstrings that little bit more nostalgically

Nearly anything the original Seekers did. Especially "Morningtown Ride".

And there was one caled "Walk With Me" I think. Haven't heard that for years but it's a beautiful ballad, Judith Durham had a great voice.

Some good tunes here, agree the Hendrix one is wonderful and on the first LP I ever bought full-price.

Why are sad songs so loved, if they make you sad?

For me, there is one particular one that reminds me of my dog who passed away, and it's Enya's "On Your Shore". We lived near the beach, and on a boat, and often went down the sand to walk. We were close, he was my constant companion since he was around 7 weeks old - found dumped off on the desert highway in Utah at around 3 weeks of age and brought back to the city by my friend who had saved him.

Otherwise there's Fairport Convention - its' beauty is powerfully underlined by the story, which is of Mary Queen of Scots who was held for a long time at Fotheringhey Castle, on the eve of her being beheaded.

Other melancholy ones

And the surprising romantic song by Greg Lake - obscure but well worth knowing imho

Elton delivered, too.

and not least, his Lennon tribute, which I have to say always makes me think.

So did his rendition of Candle in The Wind for Diana Spencer (sorry if you don't care about her, I did so I find this affective)

The Port of Noddy Holder
Old Shep - Elvis Presley (Kills his pet dog)
Who Wants To Live Forever -Queen. (Always reminds me of Freddie )

And for some inexplicable reason , Who Will Buy This Wonderful Morning , from the film Oliver. Whenever it's on I start singing it and then blub like a girl. My family think it's hilarious.

Seems so lame that a film about talking rabbits can make a grown man cry but it gets me every single time......
