Wasn't that part of Villa's problem this season? Rafa at Newcastle was able to sell off a few expensive players for big money to buy in players to get out of the Championship, whereas Villa had big name players on big contracts and huge wages who just weren't saleable. Anyone for Richards, Agbonlahor......? no, thought not.

Hope Tommy Elphick gets out of there to a decent Championship club, though.

Totally agree, unlike Newcastle, they have nothing in their squad that is saleable above probably 5 mill. So they either cheat or go into mediocrity.

Think they spent 42 million on 3 strikers
Not that much, but they haven't been shy of flashing the cash last season:

11m on Kodija
12m on McCormack
12m on Hogan

Plus lot of other deals such as 9m on James Chester. Was definitely a case of trying to buy self out of the league.

Think they would only need a player or two in the Summer tbh. Their squad is starting to settle and after a full pre season I think they'll be a decent side next season. Obviously hope I'm wrong and they rot in the league for years to come, along with SAFC.

£4m on an Italian goalie who seems to have disappeared
£5m on Tshibola , WHO ?

Plus wages on them too, someone has had Xia's pants down with these transfers

This. Newcastle were slightly unfortunate to be relegated with the quality of squad they had and were always going to be hot favourites for top two spot because they could sell and buy Ritchie etc to get themselves back. Villa had a load of expensive donkeys by comparison.

And this is the rub: spend big to stay in PL and you risk leaving yourselves with an even bigger problem if you fail. Which is why relegated teams do not always bounce back despite parachute payments.

Steve Bruce hit with Aston Villa cash freeze and told he must sell before he can buy.
Villa have stressed that owner Dr Tony Xia remains totally committed to the club, after a mammoth £70million spend this season, and the cutbacks are a result of Financial Fair Play regulations.
So they're saying that despite massive parachute payments, they're already losing £39m over 3 years, even without buying anyone? That sounds surprising.

5Live covered this tonight. They contrasted Boro and Sunderland, who each have only one saleable for big money player this summer (Gibson and Pickford), whereas Newcastle sold Wijnaldum and Sissoko for huge money with Ashley's additional money brought in eleven quality players.

Despite the headline, Villa really will cheat. A fine six months later will be a drop in the ocean compared to £100m TV money x season-after-season. Arrogant club and fanbase, still living on a league title and European Cup two almost 40 years ago.

Don't suppose they sold Townsend to Palace for a few hundred quid either!
