For those that wish to dismiss those voicing opposition to Trump's poison, this well worn verse should serve as a reminder as to why we need "handwringing numpties"...

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Be careful out there people.

That's why all citizens should arm themselves.

And that speech is one that highlights the need to uphold the second ammendment with many people in the US.

I would get rid of this thing of when 100k+ on a peition demand something it needs to be discussed in parliament, stupid idea we really have got better things to get on with than fringe issues like this. If there was a ban Trump and co would love it but sadly Don it aint gonna happen

"This thing" is called direct democracy. Yeah get rid of that "stupid idea".

Don't underestimate the power and stupidity of the American voter.

Don't worry about American voters, bigger things to worry about closer to home.

Given the outside possibility that Trump could become the next American President, there was never any realistic possibility of his being barred from the UK and I don't think our national interest would have been served by doing so. However, I would not be so swift to dismiss the sense in having the debate nor see the need to insult those signing the petition. Yes, there is such a thing as freedom of speech. Trump is free to make whatever remarks he chooses and we remain free to voice any opposition to them that we might have. There are worrying undertones in U.S political debate right now. Witness the Muslim that was removed from a Trump rally while wearing a sweatshirt declaring that she came in peace.

Of course I'm not saying we shouldn't speak out against his poisonous rhetoric, or voice an opinion on it. But by saying "well if he wants to ban muslims from travelling to the USA, then WE should ban HIM from travelling the UK", we might as well go on to say "so NEERRRR" at the end of it, put our fingers in our ears and poke our tongue out at him. Its tit-for-tat playground stuff and complete nonsense. Challenge his views. Engage him in debate. Invite him over to visit some British muslim communities. But don't just sign a childish "yaah boo sucks" petition and then collectively pat ourselves on the backs thinking "Hah. That'll show him".

It won't. Its just embarrassing populist bunkum that makes us look utterly moronic.

+ It would almost be worth seeing Trump /Palin storm to victory at the next election just to witness the hypocritical, hysterical, appalled outrage of the 'handwringing numpties'.

- President Trump would probably lead to WW3

A close call but after much careful consideration it's a no from me.

600,000 numpties voted to ban him, thankfully 40-odd million didn't. Pathetic and embarrassing tit-for-tat posturing, makes us Brits look like a bunch of hand-wringing old busybodies. We might think Trump is a buffoon, we might think his rhetoric is ignorant, we might disagree with his outspoken views, but there is such a thing as freedom of speech. Banning Trump from the UK, when you look at some of the regimes who are regularly wined and dined at No10, would have been nonsensical, hypocritical and deeply embarrassing.

Strictly speaking, I think you will find that when a petition reaches 100k, it is consdered for debate, there is no guarantee it will actually be debated. Agree that it is a ridiculous system because far to many people jump on a bandwagon and sign anything in front of them!!!

The dream ticket - for the Democrats. The US Republican Party, the joke that keeps on giving. Its a worrying state of affairs when the most sane candidate appears to be a Bush family member.

The entertainment value would be tremendous were he to pick Palin as his running partner if he were nominated, but I doubt it will happen. Trump is a nasty piece of work but not completely stupid unlike Palin.

Scarily Amerika is more than dumb enough to vote for that ticket. Reagan? Schwarzenegger? Sake! Just how low can the bar GET for that idiot nation? ???

The fact that it got enough signatures and was debated is an unfortunate side effect of this whole charade. What is going through the heads of the people who sign up to it though ? My guess is that most of them couldn't really give a toss about what they were actually signing. It was just another chance to get "offended" on someone elses behalf, and join in with a populist high profile movement against a widely ridiculed American politician. A bandwagon to jump on, as you say.

Tedious.

The traditional democratic path for this country is to elect your representatives via a secret ballot, then trust them to debate and decide policy thereafter until the next election.

Now we have this ridiculous reactionary process whereby people who are offended on someonelse' behalf just jerk their knees, whatever that means, and call on parliament to waste time debating an issue which really is an irrelevance to the lives of the people of this country. The debate was not about the leader of the USA, but about whether a numpty who would like to run for leader of the USA should be allowed to visit this country which he probably has no intention of doing right now.

More wasted money by the offended left.

Don't forget a similar number of people have signed a petition to close UK borders to stop terrorists, which will also have to be debated, so is therefore 'More wasted money by the reactionary right'

I do agree with you, but haven't we banned lots of islamic 'hate-clerics' coming to the UK. We should at least be consistent

The hate clerics actively preach jihad and urge muslims to take up arms against 'infidels', to carry out atrocities.

Trump was on about suspending muslims from entering the USA "till we figure out whats going on". Not that his views are in any way defensible, but there is a difference.

Different methods, similar results Anti-Muslim attacks occurring in record numbers across US Not to blame Trump directly, but hate-speech in general
