Fair enough, if people want to do some research they can inform themselves and draw their own conclusions. A recommended starting point would be the recent BBC documentary Napoleon.

I saw it, however it did not address some of the underlying points set out above, and Andrew Roberts largely sought to reposition NB's more positive social policies to balance those that are unjustifiable.

For example, whilst NB sought to resolve the religious civil war that was effectively taking place post revolution, by bringing the a Catholic Church into the tent he took a great big shit on the fundamental principles of the revolution.

This could possibly be excused as a way to resolve the civil strife, however it also meant he was given approval by the papacy to crown himself emperor of France (handed the crown by the pope in a cathedral) and then get himself legitimised in the eyes of other European monarchies.

This meant he could marry an Austrian Hapsburg princess and lay the foundation for his own ruling dynasty.

So, point to the code Napoleon if you want, however in shout he wanted to be the same as any French King before..........for a republican like you he is no hero, just another monarch.

For a less ingenuous version try this, humorous and a good read.
