Blair being Catholic in office would not have bound him to make decisions by the laws of the church, as MYOB has pointed out this is not the case in Ireland, Italy, Spain, Phillipines etc.

Indeed. The leader who most cow-towed to the Catholic Church here was Douglas Hyde.

Who was Protestant. Seemed desperate to impress them at all times, probably set the country back some years as a result...

Erskine Childers jr. made moves towards that also, but died in office so never got to quite do it.
