Aye, that's the one. If I was Watson, I'd have been tempted to ask Vaz how grateful Janner was for his support - just to wipe that semi-permanent smug smile off his face!

That's the NSPCC, whose own childline vehicle never once took a call about Jimmy Saville or Cyril Smith. The NSPCC whose former head Peter Wanless could find no documents relating to historical child abuse at the Home Office earlier this year, only for it to later turn up days after Leon Brittan's death. The NSPCC whose front-woman Ester Rantzen shared a bed with known paedophile Nicolas Fairbarn and had 'no idea' of close friend Jimmy Saville's activities.

"The Anglican and Catholic churches and "people of public prominence" are to be investigated by the inquiry into child sexual abuse, its chair has said.
Justice Lowell Goddard said councils in Lambeth, Nottinghamshire and Rochdale councils will also be examined as part of 12 separate investigations in England and Wales.

The scale of the inquiry was "unprecedented" in the UK, but she was determined it would succeed, she added.

The inquiry is due to take five years.

The 12 investigations will look at child protection and allegations of abuse relating to:

Children in the care of Lambeth Council
Children in the care of Nottinghamshire councils
Cambridge House, Knowl View and Rochdale Council
Child sexual abuse in the Anglican Church
Child sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church
The sexual abuse of children in custodial institutions
Child sexual abuse in residential schools
The internet and child sexual abuse
Child exploitation by organised networks
The protection of children outside the United Kingdom
Accountability and reparations for victims and survivors
Allegations of child sexual abuse linked to Westminster."

5 years! What is it with these inquiries (also see Chilcott). World War's have been won and lost in shorter times

The cynic in me seems to think that is just enough time for all those who may be accused to die off and for minimal convictions to be brought.

It won't be 5 years. More like 10.

No Jersey and no Kincora is a big disappointment as well.

But, yes, clearly, otherwise Dan Hodges and David Aaronovitch would be crying 'witchhunt.' With the greatest of respect to her credentials, the establishment knows it has nothing to fear from Goddard. Surely Inspector Knacker's got enough on this Labour ex-Blair cabinet minister by now though?

Apparently he was to ill to stand trial after all. But who needs due process as this thread clearly shows accusation = guilt.

Wasn't too ill to stand trial in '91 or 2007 when the CPS decided not to pursue cases.

22 accusations from 9 separate sources over 30 years.

We'll see how it develops. I note no one's falling over themselves to make a statement praising him at the moment. Not even his great mate Vaz.
