Heard today that Gaunts suspension has now become a sacking. He had a habit of constantly repeating his own views and verbally abusing callers who did not agree with him, others would be cut off if they attempted to standby their opinion, even those who agreed with him would be stopped short whilst Gaunt again repeated his view.
Ten to fifteen minutes was all I could stand of his arrogance but listening last week to Ian Collinson standing in for him I found a refreshing and enjoyable program.
I understand this is not the first time that Gaunt has been sacked from a radio station, it will now give him more time to work on his "Sun" column

The bloke had a problem of being both opinionated and un-educated.

When I've listened to him, as much as his views on a number of issues turned me off, I very much enjoyed his constant digs at the BNP on air.

Generally, I draw the line at out and out racism or fascism, but I think it's important to have different views shouting at us whether that be from the media or politicians.

If you have the same political views as the Guardian, I don't personally think you learn a lot from reading it. If someone has completely different views from mine it actually helps me make my mind up on my own.

As for Jon Gaunt I think it's quite sad that he sacked over a subject something that was genuinely true to his heart. He was in a care home himself and I have more than a little sympathy with his views over foster parents that happen to smoke. There are probably more important criteria to think about when housing a child.

Totally agree, I prefer reading opposing views, news reported by agencies with alternate political leanings to my own. It gives me the other side as it is, not as I assume it is, and raises issues I hadn't considered.

I also find it forces me to look beyond how a story is presented ti see the truth beyond, whereas if I read something I agree with, I may be tempted to assume I agree with them on new subjects I've not made my mind up on, thus stopping my thinking for myself.

I'd recommend everyone reads papers they usually disagree with.

Glad someones agrees, I very rarely read any newspaper with the same political views as my own.

Glad he's gone and hope they get a decent presenter for the ten until one slot so I can start listening again.

Agree. When listening in the car, Gaunt's novelty wears off after 5mins and he's not worth listening too; slightest disagreement with his viewsand he starts shouting and being overly rude to callers. There's just been a change in mood - shock jocks are out of fashion and that's all he was. A fashion in the Ross-Brand mold.

About sums him up, member of the nasty nasty party. Wonder if the sun will keep him on.
I think you've got the wrong end of the stick there. It's been accepted that Rod Lucas joined the BNP as an investigative journo trying to find out what it's all about.
The independant hates John Gaunt because he's slagged of one of their columnists on air many a time, so they are hardly going to be objective.

I always found Gaunt's show quite entertaining, sometimes I aggreed with him sometimes I didn't, but him rowing with callers and guests could be quite comical, he never gave any politicion an easy ride, weather they were left or right wing.
I think he is quite misunderstood, I don't actually think he takes himsef that seriously, alot of the arrogance was just a joke and a wind up on his part, but in the end he'd just become a charactuer of himself and said alot of things just to get a reaction out of guests or listeners.

All that said, I quite like Ian collins (I've changed my opinion this week since the other thread) and even George Galloway does a good show, as much as I dislike the man and his politics.

I agreed with most of what Jon Gaunt said....he stuck up for the working class. It was just the way he put it across that i hated...his smug "my opinion's the only one that matters" attitude and the fact that he never has a good debate with anyone.

Ian Collins did this slot before Gaunt was there and i loved it....i will now go back to listening to Collins after my move across to 5-dead during the Gaunt era

Jon Gaunt is an arrogant WANKER. He gave the impression he was the voice of the people but the only person he really cared about was himself and his absolutely HUGE ego. It's not just a face he puts on for the radio either. He's an arsehole in real life as well.

I'm absolutely delighted he's been booted off the morning show. Ian Collins was much better and I'm glad he seems to be back in that slot.

well i think that he'll be missed i have read his book and he has had a hell of a life and if people had the bringing up that he had they would not be as successful as he was yes he was over self oppinuated but that made his show good to listen to.
Ian Collins is ok but he hasn't got that spark or the balls to get down to the nitty gritty with people

Does this mean we won't be able to hear the educated call in, which went like-
'Its political correctness gawn mad Gaunty. This country's gawn to the dawgs, and I blame Gordon Brown' ?

You forgot to add

"I'm not a racialist like, but a lot of the problems due to the blacks and pakis"
