Not unlike when Southampton brought in Clive Woodward. That ended well.

Slightly different: Woodward was brought in to help with the playing side, Andrew has no input on coaching. He was appointed on the basis of his many years of experience in sports administration - the fact that he was an ex-first class cricketer probably helped a bit, but it's his admin skills that were needed.

I don't think he's done a bad job TBH. There's been a complete overhaul of the links between clubs and county - something that's been long overdue. And I think the plans to develop the south-west corner are promising, should provide some stable income. The crunch will come when he appoints the next coach, he has to get that right.

To be fair to Andrew, at the time, getting Gillespie was quite a coup. Shame he didn't deliver to expectations.

Exactly right. It was an ambitious move made with good intentions. It doesn’t always work out though - that’s sport for you.
