Squad numbers mean nothing in general, it's as much about player preference as actual relevance. Virgo had a reason for wanting 23 as I recall. Obviously Zamora had his 25.

I would imagine that the offer of a low squad number could be a factor, albeit minor, in persuading a player to sign. EG Jake Wright being given No.5.
