This could easily become a thread full of 80s songs, I've just remembered Propaganda 'Duel', Bronski Beat 'Smalltown Boy' and my favourite OMD track 'Souvenir'.

Getting more up-to-date though, I'm going with Beck's cover of 'Everybody's Got To Hurt Sometimes' from the noughties

and from the teenies Passion Pit 'I've Got Your Number'.Still get blown away by how good this tune is.

Listening to this when I was living in Canada in the 80s had me in floods, pining for Sussex By The Sea . . . quintessential pastoral England, with lovely piano

Much as I loved The Stranglers at the time, their main Unique Selling Proposition was patently the highly accomplished keyboards = entry-level punk for students and older brothers who never quite 'got' punk and who would far rather be listening to The Doors. They mainly loved The Stranglers because 'they could play their instruments'.
