Thank you for that link hon. For me, that article's the perfect counterpoint to put all the Rooney crap of late to bed. Talking of which, it's time I went off to mine.

Night, night all.

The sheer scale of the carnage at the Battle of the Somme is unimaginable today.

The Battle of the Somme only lasted for 20 weeks. Over 310,000 men died. That is 150 times more than the death toll among Allied troops in the 10 years since the war in Afghanistan started.

Aside from the dead, almost 800,000 people were wounded.

I've got a history-teacher colleague here in the US that plays that episode in class the day nearest to 11 November with tremendous effect. Kids from seven, eight years ago report back that it's the only thing they still remember, that i is important that he keep the house lights down so the boys can't be seen crying, etc.
