Snoring can also be associated with obstructive sleep apnoea which, if left undiagnosed and untreated, can lead to heart attacks and/or stroke.

Very much this. I was diagnosed with it recently and had surgery to fix it. My left nostril was completely blocked and I have a naturally flabby neck which was constricting the windpipe (I am not overweight). All my siblings snore and my brother has to sleep with a mask on his face - he refuses to have surgery. I suggest the O/P goes and sees a doctor about it sharpish.
