Obviously they don't,which is obviously why it used to take me 6 minutes 43 seconds to run 400 metres(when I was a lot younger,and not carrying 39 years worth of best bitter)

Typically a running track is two straight and hopefully parallel sides, joined by an arc (often a semi-circle) - it is not an ellipse.
