Roulette Machines in the bookies

Does anyone play them as they seem sooo popular in a bookies...

I lost 200 in one yesterday and felt really bad after.... said i wont play them again but it is hard... Was mad lost the hundread in my wallet and then tried to chase my money back by using my card... After saving a pund here and there and making my own lunches to save cash... something like this is pure madness...

I go to the bookies every sat and sometimes in the week (yes i may have a problem) but my mates i go with also lose a few hundred pound every week...

Questions

1) how is it legal for the bookies to get a way with a max bet of £200 and the spin to be over in 10 seconds.. I see so many people lose thousands... It seems deadly and there is no restrictions for people who play and cant stop themselves

2) does anyone really win and to me it seems like a biased number generator in the bookies favour... and yet i still play them to try and win...

Im already struggling to give up smoking and havent had a smoke since new year... Can i cope by not gambling aswell... I do love a footy accumulator and its going to place that bet that i play the roulette.

From someone who worked in a bookies and loves to play poker. DONT play roulette if you dont like losing your money. The house edge will always get you in the end. your better off betting on the horses the margin is much less. Better still play poker where you can work the odds in your favor. I go to the casino often to play poker but have no trouble in walking past every other table in there.

Worthing
Some people might sympathise, but I just think you are a very stupid person.
£200 quid sweltering on a machine ffs, that already mugged you off for £100 so you throw another c-note's worth in.
Just stupid.

You sound like the type that would say to someone with manic/severe depression ( or any variant ) to just pull themselves together.

I win some days, lose other days, but I only bet what I can afford. Took £1000 out a few weeks ago

I took out £508.40 for a tenner in Duke Street at about 1:30pm. Banked won't be 'playing' for a wee while.

From today's Racing Post:

Gambling machines boost Ladbrokes profits

A 19.2 percent boost from gambling machines triggered a £193.5 million full year operating profit Ladbrokes announced on Thursday.

The firm reported an operating profit fall of 4.3 percent (from £202.3 million in 2010). But the numbers beat City expectations. The average forecast had been £187 million, according to a Thomson Reuters poll of 15 analysts. Revenue, which, like profits excludes high rollers, grew by 0.4 percent at £980.3 million.

Gross win, total bets minus payouts, from machines rose by 19.2 percent to 360.9 million pounds.

Chief executive Richard Glynn said: "The contribution from machines has been excellent and we have grown profit per shop for a second consecutive year despite a comparatively poor gross win margin in the second half of 2011 and continued cost pressures."

Ladbrokes blamed unfavourable sporting results, particularly in the fouth quater on their sportsbook margin which was almost two percentage points lower than in the same period of 2010.

Net debt was reduced by £38.1 million and the company increased its dividend per share - final dividend of 3.90 pence up 4.0 percent ( full year of 7.80 pence, up 2.6 percent).

I knew that this would be the case... im surprised that these machines don't contribute to at least 50% percent of their total profit... They make hundreds and possibly thousands an hour.

Unfavourable sporting results... like what... in football its been well unpredictable...

£10 in and use neighbour bet, walk out once you hit £50 can't go wrong. If I'm left with a spare couple quid I'll bet it and can boost it up to £100 sometimes. The trick is only bet a bit of spare cash.

I did have a go when i was in Devon on a golfing holiday. I went with a mate who has a real addiction. We drove around Okehampton looking for a bookies... We found one down some backstreet and went in for a bit of fun...

I played with £20 and hit a £2 number and took £80 out... My mate tilted and did over £300...

As you said play with what you are willing to lose... i Sometime assign myself say £20 and lose it but then try and chase it back.. have to let it go..

Also i like to have just a few spins but have some big numbers (cpl of £2/3 numbers) so if i hit i take a decent amount and walk without needing to hit several numbers to get to an amount im happy with.

I was alerted to this thread by a Brighton fan who doesn't want to post and reveal that gambling on these machines has been a problem for them.

That's what the bookies do with these machines. A business model based on addiction and indebtness, knowing that no-one will speak out as it means admitting to having a problem.

You couldn't script it where a government allows something so potentially addictive to be PROMOTED on TV, radio and newspapers.

I'm part of Gambling Reform & Society Perception (GRASP) Group and we're actively lobbying to sort these machines out and the clustering of bookies in our high streets.

Would be great if anyone could sign up and show support. The government are helping peddle this 'something for nonsense' that only leads to carnage and causes crime, divorce, homelessness, mental health, prison etc

Cheers,

Arnold

Pathetic post, this is a free country and as such people must be allowed to choose their own destiny & spend their money as they choose, just because you don't like one legal way of doing it anyone why try and take away the enjoyment of others.
Why don't you petition for trains to stop running in case a 'jumper' turns up or maybe knock down Beachy Head??

William Hill were handing out vouchers for a fiver last week on the gaming machines if you placed a football bet. I won a fair bit of money on them but I'm not tempted to play those machines again; they want to start to get more people hooked on those evil bastards.

That's the sort of thing that should be banned, like a drug dealer handing out free samples to get people hooked

I have had a problem with these machines in the past. Dont play them anymore, roulette is the worst game in terms of odds as there a 37 numbers and pays 35 to 1. Occasionally have a bet on the football but only a pound not to entice me to gamble anymore. Hope you can sort it mate.

Some people do some really weird things when playing these things.

I saw some guy making a circular motion with his head whilst the wheel on spinning and near the end he span round on one foot, pointed at the screen with his index finger and said 'Shazzam!!' ?!!?

I am a manager of a bookmakers, gambling like many things can be an addiction, in my opinion worse than an alcoholic (my eldest son is an alcoholic so I speak with a decent amount of experience on both counts) I could tell sad storys most likely every day with regards to the FOBT machines, but I wont (those sad storys would only be about the same few people day in day out anyway!)

Basically, and in my opinion, and with first hand experience of the subject in question, I feel that individuals should be allowed a choice in life, in many things, for every addict I watch on the machines, I see many responsible people using them, many many more responsible people from all walks of life as opposed to a few addicts.

Yes they can be addictive, as can cigarettes, alcohol, chocolate and just about anything you want to think about, the same old saying stands, "to much of anything can be bad for you" Now if every tempting item were to be taken away from all of us, what would we be left with? not much I doubt. individual control is whats needed, not individuals blaming all and sundry for what they cant help themselves for.

On a good note, David Cameron has and is doing a fine job of stopping many betting shops best customers!! and long may he continue to do so, anyone who is claiming JSA / certain Benefits but can enter a betting shop everyday and be their best customer is proving there is a problem way above machine addiction!

I fully accept other peoples points of view on the subject, after all its a free country and as an individual we are allowed a choice of what we feel is right or wrong.
