i heard him sing before seeing him...i always imagined him to be about 7ft tall with a voice like that, turns out hes about 4 ft.

Terrible, terrible news. One of THE singers of Rock/Metal a fantastic voice and (as has already been mentioned) very small too. Seem to remember reading that he trained as some sort of wind/brass instrument player in an orchestra in his youth which he said helped with his breathing and power as a singer.

I saw Dio as a kid in Belfast years ago. After the support act Ronnie ran on in spandex and shouted "Good evening Dublin!", his face was a peach as everyone was booing, giving him the fingers, and one guy tried to get on stage to deck him.
