Not bad for a fat lad was he?

Where do you reckon he ranks all time?

Can't stand Real Madrid, but, was lucky enough to see his debut for them when he scored with his first touch.

For me he's certainly the best striker I've seen play and I'm 42. It's that power running combined with exquisite ball control and total all-round game that does it for me. He regularly made goals completely out of nothing.

In my opinion, if England had had a player like Ronaldo we would have won both the World Cup in 90 and Euro 96.

RIP the chunky monkey. No doubt he'll be celebrating his retirement with a couple of Brazil's finest transexual whores.

In all seriousness glad he won the World Cup in 2002 after having a fit and missing the 1998 final. Would have easily been remembered with the likes of Pele and Maradona if it wasn't for all those knee injuries.

without doubt the best striker i've seen since watching football

his turn of pace was out of this WORLD, and for a big bloke he had incredible control.....and of course his finishing was amazing

anyone got an accurate goalscoring record for him? i'd be interested to see it

His goalscoring record is phenomenal. I'm not sure how accurate Wiki is for his stats...

Years Team Apps† (Gls)†
1993 Cruzeiro 14 (12)
1994–1996 PSV 46 (42)
1996–1997 Barcelona 37 (34)
1997–2002 Inter Milan 68 (49)
2002–2007 Real Madrid 127 (83)
2007–2008 AC Milan 20 (9)
2009–2011 Corinthians 31 (18)
Total 343 (247)
National team
1994–2006 Brazil 97 (62)

I had 1,000 kwacha on Brazil winning the world cup and I am sure they would have done so if Ronaldo had been fit to play.

Barcelona / Real Madrid
AC Milan / Inter

Is he the only player in history to play for all 4 of those clubs?

When he was at Barca he was incredible, shame injuries took away that explosive pace but still has to be up there with the top 10 forwards ever

Such a pity that he was injured so much of the time, especially at Inter when he was probably at the peak of his powers. He would have smashed Pele's goal record for Brazil (77) for sure without those injuries. Can't believe he only play 68 games in 5 years at Inter.

i'm 24 so to me he is the FIRST footballing HERO.

His pace, power, skill...and he seemed a LOVELY CHAP.

Fifa games where he was referred to as R9.
His R9 footy boots which my parents bought me and were my pride and joy.
My Ronaldo Inter Milan shirt.
Watching Football Italia every week just to see him and Batistuta.
The uefa cup final where he did a stepover before rounding the keeper and scoring.
The 98 DRAMA.
The Galacticos era.
The tragic injurys
The long-awaited returns
The Ronaldo- Ronaldinho- Rivaldo- Roberto Carlos team that oozed class.
247 goals in 343 games.

All of this makes him absolutely heroic to me.

The one season he played for Barcelona (under Bobby Robson, I believe), he was UNPLAYABLE -to borrow a new-fangled commentators' favourite.

after having a fit and missing the 1998 final.

Wasn't the whole issue that someone didn't let him miss that game, despite the fit? I'm sure he played, as there was all the conspiracy nonsense that Brazil had been pressured into making him play by their sponsors, Nike.

He was undoubtedly one of the best strikers I've ever seen. 1996-1998, he was just simply unplayable. Some of his performances and goals in that one season at Barcelona was just breath-taking. The knee injuries were just devastating, and it just shows how good he was that with his electric acceleration gone, he was STILL one of the great strikers.

A great player, but there still remains an element of "what might have been" which is a real shame.
