Somewhere between the two lurks the hybrid, although don't bomb along the cycle lane on Madeira Drive, as I did recently, or you'll only hit a pedestrian who wanders aimlessly into your path and who walks away with just a bruise as you lie there with a badly broken collar bone

Mountain biking is only a pure sport when its cross country though - you have to earn the downhill by climbing up those hills first! Any roadie who has done large climbs on singletrack or fire road has GOT to respect mountain bikers IMO, whilst mountain bikers have got to respect the sheer athleticism of road racing.

Undoubtably the case. Although I do both these days, road riding is where it's at.
