I'd say that Wycombe and Colchester is the strangest. I wonder if anyone knows of rivalries that exist outside of the 5 divisions?

Peterborough v Cambridge is iffy, simply because Peterborough have an equally passionate rivalry with Northampton.

Nope, it has ALWAYS been Oxford - Swindon and Reading - Aldershot.



In fact, Oxford - Swindon is a rivalry that goes beyond football, much like Southampton - Portsmouth. Reading make up the third point of the "Didcot triangle" but have always been very much a secondary rivalry for both. Some Swindon fans even look towards Bristol for a rivalry ahead of Reading.

It is interesting that sometimes the rivalries aren't cut and dried and they can change over time. Who are Man U's main rivals for example? Man City or Liverpool? And who are Liverpool's main rivals? United or Everton? Do Leeds still consider Man U to be a rival?

And yes, I accept that for most Brighton fans the main rivalry is with Palace.

Why is Colchester v Wycombe a mutual rivalry? Must be a good story if true.

Goes back to 1990 when they were both vying to get out of the Conference. I think Colchester got out that season with Wycombe making it the following year.

Colchester's keeper scored an equaliser in a crucial do or die match at Adams Park I think.
